The state is urging property owners along the Massachusetts coast to elevate their homes 1 to 3 feet to protect against storms and the threat that rising seas will bring the waters to their doorsteps.
more stories like thisIt's just a recommendation - not a requirement - but the message being delivered by the new StormSmart Coasts program is a sign that many municipal and state officials are concerned about the risk global warming may bring to property owners along the 1,700-mile Massachusetts coastline.
"It's scary," said Vincent J. Kalishes III, Scituate's conservation agent, who took part in planning the StormSmart Coasts program and attended a workshop in Norwell earlier this month.
By elevating their house levels, the state says, homeowners can save money on flood insurance whether or not flood water ever licks at their doors.

Is’nt this the place where all the smart people live?
I wouldn’t worry about it, because one of these days an offshore oil rig is bound to poke a hole in the Earth’s crust beneath the sea and all the ocean water will drain down into the center of the earth.
Changes in the Suns Surface to Bring Next Climate Change
Today, Director of the SSRC, John Casey has reaffirmed earlier research he led that independently discovered the suns changes are the result of a family of cycles that bring about climate shifts from cold climate to warm and back again.
We today confirm the recent announcement by NASA that there are historic and important changes taking place on the suns surface. This will have only one outcome - a new climate change is coming that will bring an extended period of deep cold to the planet. This is not however a unique event for the planet although it is critically important news to this and the next generations. It is but the normal sequence of alternating climate changes that has been going on for thousands of years. Further according to our research, this series of solar cycles are so predictable that they can be used to roughly forecast the next series of climate changes many decades in advance. I have verified the accuracy of these cycles behavior over the last 1,100 years relative to temperatures on Earth, to well over 90%.
Hey MA coastal Residents, You know what this means, It’s that time again to get out your wallets and fork out some more.
It is well that it is the State Government recommending a remedy; the Federal Government would recommend lowering the ground.
I was just reading the other day where their are 2 more smaller red spots that just appeared recently on Jupiter. They think it has something to do with Jupiter getting warmer. A few months ago I read where Mars is a little warmer now than it was decades ago. Earth, Mars, Jupiter. Common denominator ... hmmmm ... duhhhh...
if it becomes a law, that means that there’s probably a group of contractors somewhere, schmoozing a group of insurance company interests and lawmakers...
Someday, people might even have to live like this.
1,700 mile coastline?
Huh???
Fractals. They used a short measuring stick.
Maybe they should slip some pontoons under the houses...just to be on the safe side.
Now I’ve got something else to worry about.
Heh.
Hey, I’m still wondering if the ozone layer ever got a hole in it, where the hell went the acid rain and please, how long I gotta wait out the bird flu threat?
Now Global Warming and I can’t sleep a wink.
Uh, so is the state going to raise the capitol building, all the roads, all the other public and private buildings? If not, raising houses won’t help a lot if everything but the houses are in the water.
Sign to come in Mass.: “Wanted, enough clean fill to raise the whole coast 3 feet.”
I wonder how much their sea level has been rising each year?
There were those homes on the Cape a few years ago that almost got washed away (Chatham?). It think THOSE folks know.
But I wonder if Kerry and Obama are going to put their Island/Vineyard estates on stilts?
MA isn’t a “state”. It is a commonwealth.
If the author doesn’t know that....then why should I believe the rest of the story?
I think the State House, atop Beacon Hill, is going to be fine.
