What is it you don’t like about McCain?

Yep, I think the system works. Michigan, New Hampshire and South Carolina are representative states. A strong candidate has a chance, even with a limited budget. That was the rational behind McCain’s Straight Talk Express. It was low buck but drew attention. It worked.

So you agree with him on his issues. What makes him a “crappy” candidate?

Some issues I agree with him on. Clearly the democrat plan to surrender to Al Qaeda is idiotic and McCain has been good on this point. Some of his issues that makes him a crappy candidate, in my opinion, are: Shamnesty and his lying that he "gets it"....no he doesn't. And he's even courting La Raza...a racist organization in an effort to pander for Hispanic votes. His gang of 14 that undermined the ability of the republicans to get anything accomplished. His buying into the global warming scam...this will destroy the US economy in the long run. McCain has some concept of a "big vision" where he's going to appoint democrats to his administration...well, the dems already have control of the Senate and Congress...so he's going to decrease the efficiency of the executive branch as well were he to be elected? That does not sound wise. You said he was for smaller government...well, he did vote for the federal government bail out of mortgage defaulters. I'm sure I could come up with a more complete list but it's last 1:30 am....time for bed.

Thanks for proving my point, the anti-McCain movement is all about one thing...immigration.

Now I’m not saying that isn’t an important issue and that McCain isn’t on the wrong side of it, I’m saying it isn’t THE ONLY issue.

But to some it is and you can tell them by the blisters on their feet.

Sorry, I'll leave the feet stomping to you kids.

And I'll leave the racism to you...you clearly have huge problems. I'm done wasting my time with you.

Probably, but first we have to take out the trash.

Goldwater ran away from the loonies. Reagan ran away from the loonies. We have to acknowledge that there are real, legitimate concerns among Republicans but sooner or later we will have to either ignore some of the goobers or run against them. So far the worst seem to be self-segregating and that is a good thing.

McCain may be a non-step forward or back. Maybe a tiny bit worse than Bush. obama would be so far beyond bad that you can’t compare it. I’m amazed so many people here wanted Bush over Kerry, when the differences were less then than this election.

I'm not sure if I'd consider McCain better or worse than Bush...I guess that doesn't matter as that's not our choice. I agree, Obama would be the worst possible result. Kerry was a self confessed war criminal...I can't imagine anyone actually wanting to vote for him.

Neither party seems capable of fielding a viable candidate.

Baloney, there is one person who revived the pub party and conservatism and that was Newt Gingrich and his Contract with America.

And of course now Newt is villified by the same people who call for a mass walk out to third parties.

Oh? You think Newt would have gotten any traction if Bush 1 was still reading lips?

You (and the republicans) have no RIGHT to my vote...if you want it, earn it. Don't blame me when you field crap and I don't salute it.

Amen, highlander.

He’s wrong. I like listening to Rush, but he has always been something of a cheerleader for the GOP. While he’s been critical of the GOP in recent months, but doesn’t make the logical conclusion that the GOP is simply not a conservative political party. That’s not surprising. His show remains popular (and profitable) because it doesn’t go too far in biting the hand that feeds.

Conservatives are in denial. They want to believe that somehow the GOP is going to jump up and become the conservative political party that it briefly was under Ronald Reagan. It just isn’t going to happen. What conservative leadership that remains in the GOP is pretty much hamstrung.

The GOP is the Whig party of the 21st century. And that will become more evident after the election. But conservatives won’t believe that until they see the party completely and utterly defeated. And probably not even then. It’s kind of like watching the Monty Python “Dead Parrot” sketch, but with conservatives insisting that the GOP is merely pining for the fjords.

McCain “slipped in on name recognition...”. Partly true. Also, ‘Rats by the thousands went to New Hampshire to vote for McCain. As I understand it, and according to Rush, all one had to do to vote in that primary was to declare intent to move to New Hampshire!

We don’t get conservative candidates by bemoaning the fact that we don’t have conservative candidates, we get them by getting involved in the party machinery at the local levels, getting ourselves appointed as delegates to state conventions and central committees, and working our asses off for conservative candidates. It has to start with us and locally!

I ran for state house of reps. in 2000 and was narrowly defeated in a district that was 5-3 Democrat. At that time, ‘Rats were seeing that Republicans were the party, generally of power, and they began running as Republicans in my (former) state. For instance, a school superintendent, who was a liberal and big NEA man was elected to the state senate as a Republican, because no real conservative would run against him.

Conservative Republicans have to learn that POWER VACUUMS WILL BE FILLED and if they are filled by default it won’t be good. By nature of the fact we are conservative we are too busy making our livings, raising our children, etc. to run for political office or work to advance conservative candidates. Liberals, on the other hand, live to pursue power because political power is the only vehicle for personal advancement that most of them have.

Conservatives must learn that we have to find the time to serve our country politically. Most conservatives are adverse to the dirtying that will come to them from politics, but if we won’t do it, then liberals will. We get the candidates we work for.

The conservatives within the GOP have already lost. The party nominated a leftist and he will likely move even further to the left taking the GOP with him. Who are you going to fight if McCain wins the election and is the head of the party? McCain will appoint his surrogates in virtually all positions of party leadership. They will in turn appoint other liberals until McCain's cultural revolution is complete and the conservatives are all purged. Do you really think you will achieve anything going against the head of the party and his lackies? In the end, McCain's backer, George Soros, will have truly achieved Marxist one party rule.

If you want to support a leftist running as a Republican, that's fine with me. But, I will never support a leftist, because I cannot repudiate my convictions.

Exactly. Conservatives need someone to rally against and they then will become a viable political force again.
