Climate is right for another swindle
The Denver Post ^ | 06/02/2008 | David Harsanyi

How does Washington plan to resolve our energy problems and control atmospheric temperatures? Well, how do they fix anything? By proposing a gargantuan boondoggle.

A "cap and trade" bill, one that will supposedly cut 66 percent of our emissions by 2050, is being debated in Congress this week.

To begin with, proponents of America's Climate Security Act have been misleading the public by claiming that cap and trade is a "market- based" solution. In truth, cap and trade does to the market what "American Idol" does to music.

The idea sounds harmless: government caps emissions, and corporations trade the allotted credits among themselves. Some of the credits will be auctioned off by government. The Wall Street Journal estimates these auctions will net $6.7 trillion for government coffers by 2050.

And those de facto taxes will not be paid by disreputable energy CEOs and their greasy lobbyist henchmen. They will be paid by you.

Environmental special interest groups — willing to do absolutely anything for the environment with your money — will be lining up at the trough to gobble up billions of dollars in pork offered by the Joe Lieberman- and John Warner-sponsored legislation.

One bill has around $190 billion allocated to training for "green-collar jobs" to replace those obnoxious people who produce energy you can actually afford. More than $500 billion is earmarked for "wildlife adaptation." Another $342 billion would be spent on international aid — because Lord knows we don't need it here — and billions more for mass transit, nuclear plants, kickbacks to Indian tribes and corporations, assistance to those having trouble paying energy bills (wonder why?) and other knickknacks.

OK, so despite the enormous costs, we're positive the cap and trade will work, right?

The European Union has a cap and trade scheme in place. It's generally regarded as a complete failure. The price of credits has plummeted, and countries were unsuccessful in meeting the emissions cap set by the Kyoto Protocol.

So, naturally, proponents refer to the EU cap and trade scheme as a "test run" or a program only in its delicate "infancy." It just wasn't executed properly. If smarter folks like Warner and Barbara Boxer could get hold of this hyper-complex initiative, boy, we're bound to see results.

The Kyoto agreement, incidentally, aspires to slash 175 millions tons of COb by 2012, which, according to professor Roger Pielke of the University of Colorado, would save six and a half days of carbon emission in total.

If delaying six days has been so difficult in Europe, what kind of economic toll would a 66 percent cut have on our economy? (The Bush administration has released a study offering a rosier picture. But since when do we care what it has to say, right? )

Naturally, numerous senators have employed the end-of-world scenario of catastrophic global warming . . . I mean climate change . . . to sell the cap and trade. But of course, few mention a recent study by the U.N.'s World Meteorological Organization — the organization behind the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change — explaining there has been no warming the past decade.

Scientists explain there could be numerous causes for this temporary slowdown. It's all very complicated.

What the layman can easily comprehend, however, is that climate is unpredictable, difficult to accurately model and impossible to control.

What we also know is that both John McCain and Barack Obama support some cap and trade scheme. Fossil fuels — which provide 85 percent of our energy — are so yesterday, these guys will legislate it away by 2050 whether a viable replacement exists or not.

Years ago, we might have referred to the rationing of energy credits and massive social engineering as "socialism."

Now we just call it bipartisan consensus.

I’ve heard that Johnny McCain is “in favor” of this bill, but I’ve never seen anything that verified this. Does anyone have a link that would confirm this one way or another?

Putting Congress in charge of solving our energy problems is like hiring the Hell’s Angels to run security at a rock concert.

Juan McCain did work with Lieberman on a prototype for the Climate Security Act, but he does seem to be backpedaling now. Whether he actually said he was "in favor" of the current bill I can't verify, only that he has been a true believer in Anthropogenic Global Warming ™Anthropogenic Climate Change ™.

This site is confused about the McCain flip-flop, too.

McCain is a big time proponent of cap and trade. In fact, McCain tried to get the ball rolling starting back in 2003, then again in 2005 with the McCain-Lieberman Stewardship acts. BTW the 2005 bill got cosponsored by Obama. They fortunately got shot down. McCain dropped his name from its current permutation that is in the senate right now. In fact, he say he wont be voting on the current bill. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_Stewardship_Act

Who doesn’t believe that if elected, McCain will go forward with a cap and trade bill with gusto?

What organizations are behind this bill? What special interests will be lobbying for its passage? Lieberman and Warner are just the front men.

Gore Invests In Carbon Credit Company, Will Media Care?

Created 2008-06-04 10:34

For years, NewsBusters has contended that Nobel Laureate Al Gore is spreading global warming hysteria to benefit his own wallet.

On Wednesday, despite claims by one of Gore's representatives two months ago, it was revealed that his Generation Investment Management private equity fund has taken a 9.5 percent stake in a company that has one of the largest carbon credit portfolios in the world.

Yet, on April 6, NewsBusters' Matthew Vadum reported [0] that in response to his The Media Ignore Al Gore's Planned Global Warming Profiteering [0] article, a GIM spokesman called his piece a "nonsense story" while claiming that neither Gore nor any other members of GIM’s board have the slightest financial vested interest in the expansion of carbon trading.

According to [1] Thomson Financial, that's now changed (emphasis added):

Generation Investment Management, the private equity fund chaired by former U.S. vice president Al Gore, has acquired a 9.5 percent stake in Camco International Ltd, a carbon asset developer.

Generation, set up in 2004 by Gore and David Blood, former chief of Goldman Sachs's asset management arm, now holds 16 million Camco shares, Camco said in a statement.

Camco, which has one of the world's largest carbon credit portfolios, works with companies to identify and develop projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and then arranges the sale and delivery of carbon credits.

Yet, on April 2, the Chronicle of Philanthropy reported [2] the following concerning Vadum's allegations about Gore's global warming profiteering (emphasis added):

Richard Campbell, a spokesman for Generation Investment Management, called the suggestions a “nonsense story.”

In an e-mail message to The Chronicle, he writes that neither Mr. Gore nor any other members of the investment company’s board will make money from the expansion of carbon trading.

To suggest then that they are somehow benefiting from the growth of this industry betrays a complete lack of knowledge of the carbon offset industry,” he writes.

That's not true anymore, is it Richard?

Of course, this is truly a fascinating development coming the very week Congress started debating a global warming bill which includes a carbon cap and trade scheme that would radically expand carbon trading and the use of carbon credits in this country.

Also interesting was Gore's support of this bill posted [3] at the Senate's Environment & Public Works website Monday:

"I want to commend Senator Boxer for her leadership of the Environment and Public Works Committee. Thanks to her vision and dedication, we have the first global warming bill in history that is comprehensive, bipartisan and that enjoys support across the country--from labor and agriculture to the business and the environmental communities. Of course the bill needs to be stronger, but it's vital that Congress begin to act. While it's important that people change their light bulbs, it's even more important that we change the laws."

Add it all up, and Gore's investment company now definitely DOES have a stake in carbon trading, and, therefore, additional financial incentive for the Nobel Laureate to spread global warming alarmism which results in government enacted legislation to counter it.

I'm sure every media outlet will be all over this development in the next 24 hours...not!

*****Update: Reuters has now reported [4] this, although conveniently ignoring the phrase "carbon credit." Regardless, now that a major wire service has addressed it, there's no excuse for other media not to. Stay tuned.

I’ve heard that Johnny McCain is “in favor” of this bill, +++++++++++++++++++ I believe he is in favor. I can't verify that specifically but in most of his recent speeches he has certainly bought into the global warming crowd's panic. I hope it's just a shift to the middle rhetoric but am quite shocked listening to him on this.

The Kaifornia State Assembly passed a bill a week ago today—44 to 33— numbered AB 2678.
This bill will require that all sellers of property=residential and commercial, to submit to a state run audit of the energy efficiency of the structures. Then, after you have obtained your “audit”, you are mandated to retrofit your building(s) before you can sell them. It is called a “Point of Sale” audit, not an energy audit. Great deception.
There are no such employees at this time at the State of Kalifornia, as far as I know. Where are they coming from? What is the length of their “expert training”?
The “energy efficiency standards” is a moving target- rapidly moving with technology.
If you are in a divorce and have to settle assets divestiture by selling the house you co-own, this divorce will be delayed.
If you are in probate with Granny’s 60 year old house—GOOD LUCK.
The additional costs of trying to bring your property up to a “current energy standard” could well exceede anything you as the seller can afford, and there is no guarantee that your buyer will be willing to pay for these changes.

The “contractors” will have a field day because you are now a captive audience upon which they can charge whatever they want, knowing that you are MANDATED to do this retrofit.

If you have worked hard inproving your education to get that big job promotion and a transfer to another state, you will now not be able to transfer because you cannot sell your house nor afford to retrofit it to the moving standard of “energy efficiency”. Again—Good Luck.

The real estate market in Kalifornia will stop in an instant, and the lending market will be similarly affected.
The politicians are pandering to the gullible public who have been drinking the Global Warming Kool Aid, and the devastating fallout from this kind of legislation will put an already broken economy into the dumpster. Kalifornia is totally broke now. This will break it further, and the possibility of this cancer spreading across the nation is very real.
This has to be stopped in it’s tracks in the Kalifornia Senate.
There has been no publicity on this bill, and it has been kept deep under the radar. I have no confidence that the Governor will refrain from signing this bill, and I don’t know if it is veto proof.
If you know anyone in the real estate business or the lending and banking business, please inform them that this bill- AB 2678- is lurking in the Kalifornia state legislature.

That's why I'm not voting for President in November. It doesn't matter who wins. They both want to end the late, great United States Of America because they'll both pursue the same domestic liberal policies in office.

What the layman can easily comprehend, however, is that climate is unpredictable, difficult to accurately model and impossible to control.

Climate models don't do mesoscale, so the Mesoscale convective systems rolling in the OH valley to DC are not modeled. The modelers parameterize instead so they take the temperature, humidity, jet stream and other things they model and guess at the type and extent of thunderstorms. The can guess based on smaller scale models that do model MSCs or they can make real world measurements. But as the climate changes the real world measurements will probably be invalid. Also the effects of the MSCs on those other modeled parameters is crudely handled.

The kicker is that these thunderstorms cause global cooling. Not much and not widespread, but not "averaged out" or balanced in any way by any other weather. There is global cooling going on right now and the climate modelers can only guess at the extent (or just ignore it like the simple physics models do).

The modelers will answer with uncertainty about clouds, etc. resulting in ranges, but that's BS. Uncertainty does not extend in both directions (warming and cooling) equally. The uncertainty is manifested in the incorrect hurricane forecasts (very low total energy last year), the incorrect 30 day climate outlooks (based mostly on persistence), etc.

In short, the author is correct, the public would be well served to totally ignore any models.
