Man Survives Nail In Skull

(Shawnee, KS) -- A Shawnee man is back to business -- and life -- just four-days after coming within a fraction-of-an-inch of being paralyzed.

On Friday, George Chandler and a friend were working on a project when the buddy lost control of a nail gun.

George thought he'd been stung by a wasp, but it wasn't long before he realized that a two-and-a-half-inch nail had pierced his skull.

Paramedics rushed him to the hospital, where they pulled the nail out with a claw hammer.

Just one-millimeter lower, doctors say, and Chandler might have ended-up with serious brain damage.

At least his buddy wasn't claiming to be a highly trained professional.

These stories happen so frequently they really aren’t news anymore.

My Uncle, from Larned, where the state asylum is, told me that the Doctors in Kansas hit themselves in the head with a hammer, because it felt so good when they stopped. He never said if they used claw hammers or some other type.

That would make a good screen name.

Normally, a good paramedic would stabilize and transport … let the Docs do the removal. Sounds like the bad ole days before paramedics existed.

Oops, missed the part where the paramedics transported before the nail was removed … my bad.

You know, when the nurse lays out all those gleaming instruments on the surgery tray I don’t ever recall seeing the claw hammer on there.

I would have felt better with vise grips, that way they could go for a straight shot pull out rather than the angular motion of the claw hammer.

I cant match these stories, the best I can do is one time I stepped on a naily board with one foot and then landed and hit the other. Or that time a sewing needle fell in my boot. The bone, went, it id.

I once narrowly missed being "nailed" in the head by an errant nail gun shot. I actually saw the nail whizz by, a half inch away from my face.

Me and the carpenter took a look at the gun, and a sliver of wood had jammed the safety mechanism in the 'fire' position.

Something similar happened in Louisiana in the early 80’s. The ER doc removed the nail with a pair of pliers.
