About 25 University of California, Berkeley, police officers and a cherry-picker have converged at the Berkeley Oak Grove, where five climbers are being threatened and may have to come down today, according to Save the Oaks spokesman Doug Buckwald.
Buckwald said he began receiving calls on an emergency phone network from climbers who "have sent word by cell phone their belief that this is it - they are coming in to get them right now."
Protesters have been in the trees since UC regents voted in December 2006 to approve a plan to build a sports training center and other facilities near Memorial Stadium.
The project calls for clearing a grove of oak trees near the football stadium, which is where protesters have been living.
The Oak Grove is located just north of the intersection Bancroft Way and Piedmont Avenue, near the International House in Berkeley.
If you shoot them wont they just fall out of the tree. Seen it done with a bear.
If they’re takin’ the monkeys out now, they better be cuttin’ down the trees after lunch.
Get some extender leads for the Taser. That should do it.
Berkeley -- UC Berkeley began removing tree-sitters' gear and cutting cables from a grove outside Memorial Stadium today, as a long-running protest aimed at preventing the university from cutting down the grove neared a possible climax.
Officers have cordoned off the sidewalk on Gayley Road just west of the stadium and are "telling people it's a crime scene," said Doug Buckwald, director of Save the Oaks, a group that has opposed the university's plans to clear the grove to make way for a training center that would adjoin the stadium.
Dan Mogulof, a spokesman for the university, said, "We are removing gear and removing lines. We are not removing people."
Climbers hired by the university are cutting lines that run from one tree to another and are removing supplies that protesters have stored in the branches, Mogulof said.
It is unclear how many protesters are in the trees. Buckwald estimated there were four, while Mogulof said there were as many as 11.
Mogulof said some of the tree sitters were "using their own waste as weapons" and had thrown jars and buckets full of urine and excrement toward the 20 to 30 police officers on the ground. None of the missiles has scored a direct hit, he said.

UC Berkeley's tree sitters protest the university's plans to build a $125 million sports training center in this oak grove next to Memorial Stadium in December 2007. At least one of the trees is more than a century old.
Supporters of tree-sitting protesters hand off food to one of the tree sitters at UC Berkeley on Sept. 14, 2007.
I was going to suggest borrowing Denver's "Crap Cannon" but that would only provide ammo for the tree monkeys........
about 4 guys with parabolic mirrors focused correctly should do it.
Bring in a crane; attach it to the top of the tree; cut the tree down, lower the tree to the ground with the protester in it. Either that, or just start cutting off the limbs around the protester.
They probably think all their supporters are getting married in the gay weddings today.
I’d be perfectly happy if they would just shoot the communist bas***** out of the tree. This is anarchy and should be treated as such. We have held off dealing with this type of thing far to long. Had we shot a few protesters back in the 1960s it would have ended that in a hurry. Of course then we would have made them martyrs, just witness what happened at Kent State.
I lived in International House, next to this grove, for several years. I used to sit under the trees, and they were beautiful. This little grove was one of the few leafy places still in the area.
That said, it is the property of the University of California. If they want to bulldoze it, I’m not going to stand in their way, lest somebody stand in my way when I want to cut down trees in my own backyard.
We just had a discussion about how in Des Moines Iowa it was tree huggers who caused the delay on repairing some dikes that broke and caused part of the flooding. They got the neighborhood riled up that trees were going to be destroyed to fix the dike. Doubt you will see this in the msm.
Try rubber bullets.
Shoot them in the a$$ with a Pellet Rifle and they’ll come down real quick. No real harm but they won’t be sitting anywhere for a while, let alone a tree.
TiiiiiMmmmmmmBerrrrrrr!!!
