Barack Obama told a group of Florida donors Friday night that Republicans will try to make voters afraid of him, and suggested they would use his race to scare up votes for John McCain.
Apparently girding for a nasty general election fight, the Illinois senator has in recent days predicted that independent GOP groups are waiting in the wings to attack him, and said his presumptive GOP rival is already fear-mongering when it comes to foreign policy.
But his comments Friday night in Jacksonville, Fla., seemed to reflect elevated concerns that his campaign to be the first black president would run headlong into political race baiters.
We know what kind of campaign theyre going to run. Theyre going to try to make you afraid, Obama said at the fundraiser. Theyre going to try to make you afraid of me. Hes young and inexperienced and hes got a funny name. And did I mention hes black? Hes got a feisty wife.
The crowd of supporters cheered, and Obama added: We know the strategy because theyve already shown their cards. Ultimately I think the American people recognize that old stuff hasnt moved us forward. That old stuff just divides us.
He said Republicans would be unable to run on the economy or foreign policy, so the election would ultimately boil down to a choice between hope and fear.
His feisty wife comment was probably a reference to a Tennessee GOP ad that criticized Michelle Obama for saying in February that she was proud of her country for the first time.
Obama mentioned the ad Friday afternoon at a press conference, where he defended his announcement

The mere fact that he would mention it is race baiting in my book.
Obeyme’s politics of preemption.
Again, if elected, he would NOT be the first black president. He would be the first bi-racial president.
Why does the media always ignore that fact?
Um, nevermind, I already know the answer to that question.
John McCain needs to say:
“If you are going to vote for me because my opponent is African American then I do not want your vote. Stay Home on Election Day.”
america needs to fear this marxist trash being president even if he was orange with purple stripes. race has nothing to do with it.
How is McCain not completely, totally kicking this idiot’s ass?
Who the hell needs to mention race?
Just the senator’s stated positions on the issues should be MORE than enough, sans not only race but the infantile name mangling and unsubstantiated rumors- don’t need ‘em, the votes and statements of the man are necessary and sufficient to either elect senator McCain or prove this country worthy of destruction.
Using race to “scare voters” is really dumb when you’re dealing with a wealth-redistributing, Marxist who believes that the way to lower the price at the pump is to tax the hell out of “Big Oil.” If you want to REALLY scare the voters, tell them that!!!
"Ultimately I think the American people recognize that old stuff hasnt moved us forward. That old stuff just divides us."
Bring up this Obama quote next time his comrades (Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, et al.) start demanding reparations from "whitey." Actually, hell, since the old stuff (i.e., racism) is just so divisive, why not end affirmative action right now?
No, he doesn’t need to say that. I really don’t care HOW we defeat Obama, but he needs to be defeated.
Sorry dude, I really don’t care WHY people vote against him, but they need to.
And if he did say that, and they stayed home, the result would be a President Obama.
There are plenty of Democrats as well who fit into the category described.
Does anyone doubt that Obama will base his entire campaign on racism?
Odumbo is always putting a foot in hiss mouth so all Mccain has to do is wait and odumbo will change or “explain” his position again
But the truth is independent in its own sphere and will survive his manipulations and be apparent in any case.
THE AUDACITY OF TRUTH ABOUT BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA
No, John McCain needs to say: “Those who will vote for a dangerous and total idiot just because he’s black, need to stay home on all election days.”
