U.S. to Take North Korea Off Terror List
New York Times ^ | June 27, 2008 | NORIMITSU ONISHI and EDWARD WONG

TOKYO — North Korea took a step on Thursday toward reintegration into the world community and rapprochement with the United States by submitting for outside inspection a long-delayed declaration of its nuclear program.

The 60-page declaration from North Korea, one of the world’s most isolated and impoverished nations, was expected to describe in previously undisclosed detail its capabilities in nuclear power and nuclear weapons — meeting a major demand of the United States and other countries that consider the North a dangerous source of instability.

“This can be a moment of opportunity for North Korea,” said President Bush, announcing the declaration at the White House. “If it continues to make the right choices it can repair its relationship with the international community.”

With issues like Iran and Iraq still unresolved, the Bush administration considers the North Korean declaration a notable diplomatic achievement in the waning months of the current presidency.

Mr. Bush said in the principle of “action for action,” the United States would lift some restrictions on commercial dealings with North Korea and within 45 days end its designation of North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism. “Today we have taken a step toward a nuclear free Korean peninsula,” he said.

China, which has been the host of the six-nation talks on the North’s nuclear program, said Thursday afternoon that the North was submitting its declaration. The White House confirmed the exchange shortly afterward and said that it would remove North Korea from the terrorism list and thus make it eligible for aid and assistance, a goal long sought by the cash-starved country….

We asked that NK meet our conditions and they apparently have (emphasis on apparently). Thus we have to meet our end of the bargain.

I’m just as uneasy about this as anyone. However, this may very well be the best way to difuse North Korea.

I’d like to point out that two years ago, nearly all of the prominent Dems were asking why we were wasting time in Iraq rather than attacking “a real threat” like North Korea. It seems that, once again, the Republicans have the better judgement.

Why don’t you disrespect our Commander in Chief on some other forum, like DU for example?

Look for the Smirking Chimp to cut a NK trade deal before leaving office. Would that convince ya?

If Bush was called out on the carpet more often from the base over the last 7 years we would not be now facing a Democrat congress and probably a democrat presidency, let alone a huge increase in in the size of gov't and spending under his command.

He needs to be criticized

Indeed he does. He's gotten more done for the DEMs than Gore or Kerry ever could have hoped for. Had he been a DEM doing the stuff he has for the past 7 years most Freepers would be calling for his removal. Thanks to Bush if Obama gets in he'll be far more powerful than Clinton or Carter was because the idiot GOP majority handed him every single executive power he asked for because he was a Wepublicant. Their short sightedness and his arrogance is gonna cost us plenty in our nations short and long term future.

Hmmmmmm. Wishful thinking!

I consider the North Korean declaration a bunch of bull. They are nuke happy. That hasn’t changed.

NEWS BULLETIN: LIARS LIE.

Wishing they were telling the truth doesn’t mean they are telling the truth.

Bush deserves the personal insults as well. Hope you like Obama and the rat house/senate thanks to Bush.

It's about time!

Poor, pitiful country full of starving people led by a man so selfless he never took a vacation.

We Americans are so lucky to have had practically eight years of this administration which has exercised nothing but clear and concise thought and decisions.

We're careful to not attack a truly belligerant nation that might have missiles; otherwise, we might have blown up the ChiComs decades ago. Who, if we had done that, would be furnishing us with our kid's shoes and toys?

It makes us want to commit suicide and vote for a communist muslim!

McCain: you'd better measure up!

How do we know they are telling the truth in this “declaration”? Why are we so quick to believe them?

Because China says so. Didn't you get the RNC memo? Communist China is our most trusted friend besides Saudi Arabia and Yemen. We do trade with them. Bush likes trade with Communist China. So Communist China is always right because a Bush is never wrong according to the GOP party leadership & a few others.
