Fascinating essay. My Turkish friends say that it’s unthinkable for single people to live alone, or for elderly folks to sling hash at fast food restaurants. Both impugn the family’s reputation.

Interesting. I have lived in a couple of non-Muslim, non-Western countries and experienced similar points of view. And we look pretty strange to them too.
