Manned Spaceship Design Unveiled (Euro-Russian)

The first official image of a Russian-European manned spacecraft has been unveiled.

It is designed to replace the Soyuz vehicle currently in use by Russia and will allow Europe to participate directly in crew transportation.

The reusable ship was conceived to carry four people towards the Moon, rivalling the US Ares/Orion system.

Unlike previous crewed vehicles, it will use thrusters to make a soft landing when it returns to Earth.

I think the main roadmap is the agreement between the European and Russian space agencies. That is their Plan A Anatoly Zak

In some respects, the capsule resembles America's next-generation spacecraft Orion. The 18-to-20-tonne Russian-European vehicle is designed to carry six crew into low-Earth orbit and four on missions to lunar orbit.

I bet it goes on top of the rocket instead of on the side like out shuttle. Thus avoiding all that nasty ice that falls off during lift off...

Maybe one day, our engineers will realize that we need to do the same.

I’m kind of surprised Russia’s moving to a reusable craft infrastructure. They’ve invested a lot into Soyuz, and it’s a very good craft now, for the most part. But this is only the first image. It looks like there’s still quite a bit of work to be done that will most likely significantly change the makeup of this craft.

Ain't that the truth! I think we need to get back to the Moon, to perfect the concepts, before we try going to Mars. We could use the moon's light gravity to construct and launch a Mars bound vehicle, all the while learning to live in a non-Earth atmosphere.

I agree that the Soyuz is a proven vehicle. However, the last two flights have had significant equipment problems on reentry (the last one coming perilously close to disaster). It is probably at its limit technologically (sort of like the Space Shuttle). If you want to take advantage of new technology, increase passenger capacity and, more importantly, use the same vehicle to operate in Earth orbit or go to the Moon, you've got to develop a new air...er, spaceframe.
