UPDATE: Obama Campaign Blames Pentagon for Troop Snub in Germany
Thursday, July 24, 2008 | Kristinn

The Obama campaign has issued a new statement blaming the Pentagon for Obama's controversial decision to scrap visits to U.S. troops and Rammstein Landstuhl military bases in Germany on Friday.

Der Spiegel initially reported this morning that Obama had cancelled the visits without reason. Then as word spread through the political world after the story was first posted at Free Republic, Obama's campaign issued a statement saying Obama thought it would be "inappropriate" to visit the troops while on a campaign trip.

After the McCain campaign issued a statement upbraiding Obama for snubbing the troops saying that it is never inappropriate to visit troops, Obama's campaign issued a new statement blaming the Pentagon:

"We learned from the Pentagon last night that the visit would be viewed instead as a campaign event. Senator Obama did not want to have a trip to see our wounded warriors perveived as a campaign event when his visit was to show his appreciation for our troops and decided instead not to go," Maj. Gen. Scott Gration, USAF (Ret), Obama spokesman.

And here they claimed the visit wasn’t political.

This bozo probably was told that it would be wrong to send cameras on such a visit and decided it wasn’t worth it if he can’t be on TV visiting the troops.

Obama makes my heart beat with hate.

From MSNBC:

From NBC's Jim Miklaszewski and Courtney Kube A U.S. military official tells NBC News they were making preparations for Sen. Barack Obama to visit wounded troops at the Landstuhl Medical Center at Ramstein, Germany on Friday, but "for some reason the visit was called off."

One military official who was working on the Obama visit said because political candidates are prohibited from using military installations as campaign backdrops, Obama's representatives were told, "he could only bring two or three of his Senate staff member, no campaign officials or workers." In addition, "Obama could not bring any media. Only military photographers would be permitted to record Obama's visit."

The official said "We didn't know why" the request to visit the wounded troops was withdrawn. "He (Obama) was more than welcome. We were all ready for him."

“So when it comes to securing the country he said he will not listen to the Generals because he has a much broader vision and they are just there to get his job done.
Now when he is advised not to make something a campaign stop he suddenly is all obediant to the military.”

Excellent point!!

Yes it does. Obama’s been shown to not be ready to be commander-in-chief.

It was Saturday, June 28 at 8:00 a.m. for about a half hour. I think that was his only visit. He was there to criticize Bush on the administration of the facility. Visiting the soldiers was secondary.
I don’t know if you’ve been there, but it is a gripping experience. These guys have just arrived from the hospitals in Germany. Freshly wounded, some fortunate to be surrounded by family, some in shock and some eager to get back to their team. The rehabilitation units are fantastic The technology and dedication to putting these injured veterans back together again is an extension of the valor displayed by our troops.

I got an e-mail which was being forwarded around, apparently written by a serviceman on the ground in Afghanistan, relaying something about this snub, the whole thing was just a photo-op, and he blew the troops off. Are you speaking of that?

Der Spiegel’s blog reports on Obama’s priorities:

1:42 p.m.: SPIEGEL ONLINE has learned that Obama has cancelled a planned short visit to the Rammstein and Landstuhl US military bases in the southwest German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The visits were planned for Friday. “Barack Obama will not be coming to us,” a spokesperson for the US military hospital in Landstuhl announced. “I don’t know why.” Shortly before the same spokeswoman had announced a planned visit by Obama.

Obama is a serial liar served by a staff of serial liars.

I’m an Air Force vet (1970 - 1974), and I am embarrassed for my Air Force that this rebrobate general officer, Scott Gration, once wore the blue.

If you think that he's bad, see if you recognize the jackass utter piece of filth to the Obamessiah's right. Those two are probably our next VP and SecDef.

I am so confused. He came not as a candidate, but as a citizen of the world. What’s going on here?

We can lead the McCain campaign to conservative water, but we can’t make them think about the ocean he ignores.

Nobody from his camp has EVER engaged us for help or advice which we give freely here on FR.

He’s so worried about the centrists who are completely apolitical until election day, that he ignores the ones (we) who have been following and engineering election ‘08 since ‘06.

I don’t think his campaign has even heard of FR.

Reminds me of the bank robbery scene in the movie Raising Arizona:

Bank Robber: Everybody freeze and drop to the floor

Bank Customer: Son, you got a panty on yer head. Now, what’s it gonna be young feller? You want I should freeze or get down on the ground? Cause if’n I freeze, I can’t rightly drop. And if’n I drop, I’m gonna be in motion.

Bank Robber: Anyone found bipedal in five wears his a** for a hat!

Bah! He cancelled the troop visit because what happened in Israel shook him up. He’s only faced adoring crowds, and getting heckled at the Wall, had him in a tizzy, and he was afraid of visiting the troops with press coverage he didn’t control, as he did in Afghanistan and Iraq, where the only images that were released, were done by military, and Obamas people got to pick what was released.

But in Germany, any slights by soldiers, or embarrassing questions, would have hit the headlines. So instead he shot hoops at the fancy hotel...before moving on to the next podium, and the next teleprompter speech.

I entertained myself during his speach by imagining the crowd shouting “ZEIG, HEIL!! ZEIG, HEIL!!” But, from what I heard of the crowd’s actual reaction, they sounded underwhelmed.
