Who is McCain's Base? (Vanity)
Vanity | 7/27/2008 | Wasted Potential

Posted on 07/27/2008 1:53:14 PM PDT by wastedpotential

I have been in sackloth and ashes ever since the end of the Republican primary season dwelling on the mess we find ourselves in. Conservatives have watched the Republican nomination process get hijacked from them while they were debating whether our candidate should be socially conservative (Huckabee) vs economically conservative (Romney). Now we have McCain, who has historically proven to be mediocre at best on both sets of issues. His only strength was his view on the Iraq war.

Now that we appear to have turned the corner in Iraq, the whole withdrawal argument may be moot. If things continue this way, McCain will be reducing troop levels and bringing the home if elected president. So what is his candidacy about? If the Iraq war is basically won before the election, what is it that will define his candidacy?

Here's another question - who is McCain's base? Who will work the phones? Who will go door to door during the 72 hour GOTV? Who will organize and fund the 527 groups that can take shots at Obama that he can't (or won't) take himself, ala the Swiftboat Vets? More simply asked - who is passionate about McCain's candidacy?

The answer, to me is, nobody. Sure, a lot of us conservatives and disaffected union democrats will vote for McCain as the lesser of 2 evils, but who will "turn out" the voters? Who will sacrifice time from work and money from their budgets to see that he gets elected?

If I am right, I think that President Barack Hussein Obama will be in office come January, killing our way of life with an overwhelming Democrat Congress. Does anyone have a better answer?

I believe you are right. Look for the GOP to trot out all kinds of scare tactics about Obama (that is, if McCain will let them). They are going to HAVE to scare us into voting for McCain.

Although, I am pretty frightened about Obama without their having done that.

killing our way of life

If accepting the lesser of two evils is our way of life, so be it.

President Barry HUSSEIN Obama has a nice cosmopolitan ring to it, does it not?

(makes me feel warm and fuzzy all over)

You are wrong. I am passinate about McCain’s candidacy. There are others. And if you quit the baby navel gazing and get one tenth passionate we might have a chance of winning.

That’s a good question.

The base could get passionate about McCain if he were to choose a conservative running mate.

Don’t discount the millions of Americans that are passionately against the prospect of Obama as POTUS, and that includes many Dems (now Independents).

They are scared of BO. Just read the comments at the end of articles about BO.

McCain’s base consists primarily of moderate Republicans and Vets.

I once vowed that I would never vote for McCain, but I am squirming out of that vow on a technicality. I will not be voting for McCain, but I will sure be voting against Obama -and that means putting an X by McCain’s name.

B.O. in the Oval Office and a big Dim majority in Congress means the destruction of this country as we have known it. I can see how we came to this mess, but I can’t understand how we were so stupid.

McCain’s base is mostly those who hate the thought of having Obama as president.

“We Suck Less” is a weak platform, but that’s all the GOP is offering in ‘08.

I am terrified of Obama’s candidacy. He is the most liberal, socialistic candidate of a major party during my lifetime. So is that the answer - McCain’s base is made up of those who despise Obama?

Have any luck turning anyone around with that type of obnoxious behavior?

I have another way that you and McCain can get committed conservatives to get energized is for McCain to actually change his positions on Amnesty, the Global Warming Scam, Embryonic Stem Cell Research, and his approach at using Big Government to solve all problems.

Shoot, I'd take 3 out of the 4 (the fourth being his Big Government Solution tendency).

If he wants us excited about him, he needs to represent us.

I agree, I am one of those passionately against Obama, but is that enough to form a “base” of support for McCain?

I believe Obama’s defeat will be due to the fact that among Obama supporters are huge numbers of mainstream, swing voters who do not have the cult-like worship of him, and that Obama’s support from these voters can only decrease between now and November.

This dropoff of voters from the Obama bandwagon is inevitable because of the following factors: Obama’s poor judgment about Iraq, his troop snub, Wright, Ayers, the “bitter clingers” comment, the huge question about islam, the huge question about support from terrorists and murderers, the arrogance of media support for Obama, and whatever else I haven’t mentioned or is yet to come.
