National, and even international, coverage of the shootings at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Church turned late this week into a discussion into whether it's safe in America to be a liberal.

One maniac goes berserk and all conservatives are painted as fanatics.

But, of course. Don't you understand anything?

Our overlords need to make it real simple for us bitter, clinging proles.

"America is at that awkward stage. It's too late to work within the system, but too early to shoot the bastards." - Claire Wolfe, 101 Things to Do 'Til the Revolution

Libertarian Wolfe made her famous observation above in the mid-nineties. Now here we are more than ten years later, even more isolated and politically disenfranchised, and we must ask the question: how far do we have to go to get past "awkward?"

A more accurate headline would say: Are You More Likely to Be Murdered By Some Wacked-Out Crazy Person With a Gun If You Are a Liberal?" I think not.
Is it safer to be a liberal or a conservative? I think it is not as safe to be a liberal, because the liberal is more likely to depend upon the police, gun free zones, and other stupid laws to keep them safe, rather than having some self-reliance.

For your consideration, I offer the following examples of some liberal/left wing hate:
Alfred A. Knopf published Nicholson Baker's "Checkpoint," a novel in which two Bush-haters talk about assassinating the president. "I'm going to kill that bastard," one character rages.
Newsday columnist Hugh Pearson likened the Republican National Convention to the "Nazi rallies held in Germany during the reign of Adolf Hitler."
Al Gore refers to GOP activists as "brown shirts."
Totenberg Wants Helms to Catch AIDS
Julianne Malveaux wants Justice Clarence Thomas to die of heart disease.
Los Angeles Times "frequent contributor" Karen Grigsby Bates, who said of Sen. Trent Lott: "Whenever I hear Trent Lott speak, I immediately think of nooses decorating trees. Big trees, with black bodies swinging from the business ends of nooses."
Linda Ronstadt said that the Republican victory on Election Day meant "we've got a new bunch of Hitlers."
Cameron Diaz declared that rape might be legalized if women didn't turn out to vote for John Kerry.
A cartoon by the widely syndicated Ted Rall described Pat Tillman, who gave up his NFL career to enlist in the Army and was then killed in Afghanistan, as a "sap" and an "idiot."
A political flier in Tennessee, depicting Bush as a mentally disabled sprinter, bore the message: "Voting for Bush is like running in the Special Olympics. Even if you win, you're still retarded."
The St. Petersburg, Fla., Democratic Club took out an ad calling for the death of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.
Comedian and (former) talk show host Craig Kilborn [Caption under footage of George W. Bush]: Snipers Wanted
Actor Alec Baldwin wants Henry Hyde to be stoned to death.
Democrat Representative Pete Stark, speaking to a Republican: "You think you are big enough to make me, you little wimp? Come on. Come over here and make me, I dare you. You little fruitcake."
Duncan “Atrios” Black discussing ABC’s The Note: "A bunch of mindless jerks who will be first up against the wall when the revolution comes."
Huffington Post blogger Tony Hendra wishes for Dick Cheney to die.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid slurs Clarence Thomas, suggesting his opinions are written in Ebonics and that he may be the janitor.
Chris Rock sez "If President Clinton would pardon me I would whip [Ken] Starr’s ass right now."
Syndicated columnist Alexander Cockburn: "There is a sound case to be made for dropping a tactical nuclear weapon on the Cuban section of Miami. The move would be applauded heartily by most Americans. Alas, Operation Good Riddance would require the sort of mature political courage sadly lacking in Washington, D.C., these days.
Democrat Senator Robert Byrd: "There are white niggers. I’ve seen a lot of white niggers in my time. I’m going to use that word."
Jesse Jackson on Jews: "Hymies" & on New York City: "Hymietown"
Barney Frank accusing President Bush of "ethnic cleansing" in New Orleans.
Numerous comments on Daily Kos about the death of Tony Snow are too vile to repeat. If you want to read them, look here How some in the reality-based community of compassion and caring honor the death of Tony Snow

"It would be a fitting tribute to those who were lost in Knoxville if this tragedy gave the authors of the ongoing morality play cause for pause -- and reflection. Or is accountability yet another lost conservative value?"

When Al Gore is held accountable for the Unabomber (who had a copy of Earth in the Balance in his cabin), I'll read sentences like this without laughing.

I hope we never have to go through the chaos and disorder you are hinting at, because small arms without organization would not be enough.

BTT

Most good Americans are still uncomfortable with the idea of planning for revolt. And the left has done a good job of demonizing armed citizens so even gun owners are suspicious of each other. Never know who the fed agitator is...
