SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama opposes offering reparations to the descendants of slaves, putting him at odds with some black groups and leaders.
The man with a serious chance to become the nation's first black president argues that government should instead combat the legacy of slavery by improving schools, health care and the economy for all.
"I have said in the past - and I'll repeat again - that the best reparations we can provide are good schools in the inner city and jobs for people who are unemployed," the Illinois Democrat said recently.
Some two dozen members of Congress are co-sponsors of legislation to create a commission that would study reparations - that is, payments and programs to make up for the damage done by slavery.

O-bam has a race strategy,
Itll be a great milestone, says he.
Forget imagination for all reparation,
And white folks payin fo slavery!
I have to stay tight with my base
And make them conscious of race
Libs are guilt-ridden so nothing forbidden
For me to stay ahead of the pace!
Yeah, wait till he gets into office and he’ll be singing a whole different tune.
he could lose some of his base on this one!
Do you have a link to anything saying he was for them?
Thanks

I thought he eluded to his approving of reparations during his speech to Chicago businessmen last week? This guy is not only inexperienced...he’s nuts!
Or is he afraid that the share that his white half will have to pay as reparations is larger than the share his black half will receive?
Incidentally, in reality he'd be a good study case and counterexample. Is he the descendant of slaves, or the descendant of slave-owners?
Cheers!
He just keeps confirming Rev. Wright’s charactization of him as a politician who has to say certain things to be elected, which was exactly the statement that convinced BHO to throw Wright under the bus.
As for good schools and jobs for unemployed, you can provide kajillion dollar schools in the inner cities and it won’t make a lick of difference if the people themselves won’t value education. And there generally is a reason most people are unemployed, namely laziness or criminal records or substance abuse. Handing them jobs won’t do a thing to change them, especially if they can get paid for doing nothing. Just more tripe for his base.

You ain’t joking, and I’m looking forward to watching the loss. :-)
“...you can provide kajillion dollar schools in the inner cities and it wont make a lick of difference if the people themselves wont value education...”
The same can be said for housing. How many ‘low income’ housing units have we seen dynamited last 20 years?
Check any Civil War era cemetery. Those souls are reparations enough.
Obama says.
LMAO In a way, that sounds like marriage, don't it? LOL
"I consistently believe that when it comes to whether it's Native Americans or African-American issues or reparations, the most important thing for the U.S. government to do is not just offer words, but offer deeds," he said.
So Obama says now he is against reparations but what he really means is he is against a cash settlement style of reparations but is all for an increase in government funds sunk into the same Dem-controlled inner cities and school systems that have not only created the problem (along with out-of-wedlock babies) but have perpetuated and maintained a permanent underclass.
So the bottomline is he DOES support reparations in the worst way possible - taxing producers to pay the non-producers to not only not produce but simply take, take, take. That's anything but change.
I thought that the three TRILLION dollars handed out to black welfare moochers (since Lyndon Johnson introduced his Great Society) were REPARATIONS.
Obama has decided that someone needs to be on the right in this campaign and McCain won’t do it so he will.
That’s strategery for you!
