Russia's Invasion Same as Hitler's

On Oct. 3, 1938, Adolf Hitler's armies marched into Sudetenland, a part of Czechoslovakia. Germany said it was responding to separatist demands from the large German population that lived there and that she was merely honoring their desire for reunion with Germany.

Hitler's tanks took over a vital part of an independent country that had largely rejected his overtures and allied itself with the West. Neither Britain nor France nor the United States did a thing to stop him.

On Aug. 7, 2008, Vladimir Putin's armies marched into South Ossetia, a part of Georgia. Russia said it was responding to separatist demands from the large Russian population that lived there and that she was merely honoring their desire for reunion with Russia.

Putin's tanks took over a vital part of an independent country that had largely rejected his overtures and allied itself with the West. Neither Britain nor France nor the United States did a thing to stop him.

Encouraged by his occupation of Sudetenland, Hitler continued his designs on Czechoslovakia itself and invaded the rest of the nation a few months later.

Will history continue to repeat itself?

I just got an email from a friend in Batumi. He said the Russians have sent in soldiers as far inland from the border as Mtskheta, which is about 1/2 hour away from Tbilisi.

He is terrified and sick. They are occupying cities.

What we could do in theory, and what we will do given the circumstances and mood are two different things IMO.

Weakness is more than a technical view of possibility.

So, what's the rest of the story? Just thinking out loud...

Russia wants to completely control oil, but former Soviet state Georgia is in between Russia and the Black Sea.

Russia stirs up separatists in South Ossetia, knowing eventually Georgia will have to respond.

Russia then uses the "comes to the aid of the separatists" scenario to invade and occupy Georgia, it's primary goal.

Once Georgia is under Russian control, Russia now has control over the oil pipelines to Europe and elsewhere and the access to and influence over European governments it hadn't been able to enjoy at any other time previously.

Next, it goes after Ukraine to continue it's goal of reacquiring all the territory it lost when the Soviet Union fell.

Knowing that the Americans won't try to stop him, especially given his new control over Europeans' much need oil, Putin is well on his goal of becoming the greatest leader Russia has ever known and Russia's rebirth as a world super power.

BS. The Chinese and the Russians know talk is cheap, and we will do nothing. No U.S. President has bothered to go to an overseas Olympic opening before. Bush went to one in a totalitarian fascist state which is working against us around the world. By doing so, he told the Russkies and Chinese that he is a trivial fool. That illustrates once again his low level of intellect and strategic understanding. He never really cared about foreign affairs, and has abandoned them to Condi in recent years.

Whats he sposed to do? start a war? in an election cycle while the American populous is war weary?

But what we we do? We need Europe in this and The Middle East or we will lose.

This is very dicey.
I agree about allies, dunno if we can trust the Uzbecks and Chechens or Tjiks

This is no time for us to go wobbly.

It may appear wobbly. This seems to be one big chess game. We don't have the resources to directly confront the evil russkies in Georgia. Especially not until we build up our stockpiles of missiles and ammunition, and other support materials (I'm thinking of a pre-world-war situation, we need to actually be ready to fight the big one).

So perhaps we make bold moves on Iran to put the Russians on notice that we can cross borders too. Plus strengthen our other allies in the area. Make Russia busy while we build strength to check them.

I agree that we are woefully unprepared for more war. A real statemanlike leader would have made that case to the American people, inaugurated a military buildup and told us who our real enemies were (as did Reagan), rather than continuing at high speed down a path which has made China our greatest potential enemy and allowed Russia to rise again.

The simple truth is the Bush is completely unqualified to be President. His background of business school and running a baseball team is no preparation at all. Of course, he is vastly better than his opponents (Gore and Kerry), but fundamentally he is trivial. Presidents should not be attending worthless sports spectacles, or reading to kids in elementary school.

You are correct this war is about many thingsnot just what the talking heads say but what they don’t say as well.

And yes I agree that Vladimir Putin is running things like the nazi take over of the Sudetenland. Things is getting curiouser & curiouser all the time.

I guess his six years experience as governor of the largest state in the lower 48 doesn't count. Oh and he has 7 years on deck as President during the largest military deployments outside of world war II. Yep, completely unqualified.

On the matter of China I think Mr Bush has pushed them in a corner. They cant sustain their growth.

McCain said victory in Iraq would be easy. I wish folks would quit thinking this guy had a clue anymore than anyone else did up front.

For DoughtyOne, since you are a certified Deranged McCain hater, I don't believe you without substantiation.
