Chinese customs officials confiscated more than 300 Bibles on Sunday from four American Christians who arrived in a southwestern city with plans to distribute them, the group's leader said.

"I heard that there's freedom of religion in China, so why is there a problem for us to bring Bibles?" Klein said. "We had over 300 copies and customs took all of them from us."

Should have known the ChiComs wouldn’t allow the Bible.
Next time, try bringing CD’s labeled ‘ispirations’.
inspirations - not ‘ispirations’
And what’s wrong with having 300 Bibles?
What do you mean what is wrong with four people having 300 Bibles. It is obvious they don’t intend to read them.
Did the claim them as they were going through customs, pay duty on their import? I need to go back and read the article.
From the article...
Chinese customs officials confiscated more than 300 Bibles on Sunday from four American Christians who arrived in a southwestern city with plans to distribute them, the group’s leader said.
The Bibles were taken from the group’s checked luggage
Seems pretty clear they were trying to bring them into the country with out claiming them but I could be wrong. What do you think?
If they do not declare them at customs as they enter the country, those too will be confiscated if they are found.
To China, these books are contraband unless approved by the censors. They do this with everything, to include magazines, and comics. Not to mention the Internet.
Seriously, these people were lucky that the Olympics were going on and they didn’t get more of a hassle. I’m thinking that they purposefully brought these Bibles to China - not to distribute - but to prove a point that China does indeed restrict religion. Every missionary I’ve ever spoken with who tells of going to China relays stern warnings about bringing in Bibles and such. It’s not like they didn’t know they would be confiscated.
Kudos to them for bringing this situation to light during the Olympics when it would receive more coverage though - especially with all the MSM reporters there right now. That was good thinking...
Ummm... I think that this person was being sarcastic, and “playing dumb” on purpose to prove the point. Pointing out that something that we Americans take for granted - such as being able to share religious views is so restricted in China.
As for the other part of your question - I think it also has to do with the younger generation being brainwashed by the liberals in the schools that communism isn’t “so bad”. And, that China has “capitalism” now, so things are “much better”. Add that to the propaganda pushed by the ChiComs and you’ve got a lot of people who are completely out of touch with the situation.
Now, I was born in 1972, so I wasn’t really around when Nixon was President. However, do you think he could’ve opened up trade with China to prevent them from more closely aligning with Russia, or getting involved in Viet Nam? I’m thinking that it might have played a role. Not that it ended up helping the Chinese people - or our country, but over 35 years ago there may have been a lot more optimism as far as getting them to change. Just a hypothesis...
I will say though that I don’t see why it’s continued as it has when it has become more than obvious that the Commies have no intention of freeing their people in any real sense of the word. Over even just the last decade or so the negatives seem to greatly outweigh the positives for us. Of course, now we are kind of stuck...
What magazines are not allowed for distribution in China? What internet sites are restricted? You sound quite knowlegeable, I would like to have a few examples. For example, if I go to China, can I post to and read Free Republic?
To give to the Chinese who want them.
So what if they do? I thought there was freedom of religion in PRC, BJN. At least that’s what you never tire of telling us repeatedly, correct?
LOL....good try at that trick question, BJN. We know YOU access the internet and FR from the local party HQ.
As I said, trick question.
Sorry BJ, but I don't have the approved list. I hear that you might.
IMO: Pretending that a country with over 1B people doesn't exist, is pretty stupid and short sighted. Especially one with nuclear weapons.
It had to be done. Better us than someone else.
And then they'd have actually delivered the Bibles.
Maybe they expected to get caught, and it was a PR move to point out Chinese hypocrisy.
“Why do four people need 300 hundred Bibles?”
The article says “Chinese customs officials confiscated more than 300 Bibles on Sunday from four American Christians who arrived in a southwestern city with plans to distribute them, the group’s leader said.”
300 seemed sufficient to prove that the Chinese government lies.
Oh yes, the god of Communism.
