In an editorial headlined How should Catholics vote? published last week, the Los Angeles Times suggested that former St. Louis Archbishop Raymond Burke, now prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura in Rome, should butt out of U.S. presidential politics. Said the Times in the Aug. 21 editorial, it will be helpful for all concerned if Burke is too busy at the Vatican to enter the fray.
Before reaching that conclusion, the newspaper described the archbishop as leader of a faction in the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops that believes Catholic voters should judge political candidates primarily by their views on abortion, and cited the USCCBs Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship as a compromise election guide for Catholic voters. The USCCB document, opined the Times, offers Catholics a prudent and nuanced view about their civic responsibilities.
[[Wuerl082508.jpg]]Held up as examples of the correct way for bishops to behave when it comes to pro-abortion politicians under their pastoral care were Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., Archbishop Donald Wuerl, who, said the Times has been savaged by conservative Catholics for refusing to bar pro-choice Catholics such as [U.S. Sen. John] Kerry and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi from the Communion rail.
Archbishop Burke, however, shows no signs of following the Times unsolicited advice. If we have a public figure who is openly and deliberately upholding abortion rights and receiving the Eucharist, what will the average person think? Burke asked Thomas McKenna of San Diego in an interview published by the Italian magazine Radici Christiane just days earlier. He or she could come to believe that, up to a certain point, it is okay to do away with an innocent life in the mothers womb.

LIBS love to silence human beings from breathing...and speaking words they disagree with
As a friend of mine often suggests. Imagine us back in 1860 and substitute the word “slavery” for abortion. Then re-read the article.
When is some bishop going to say something about “pro abortion Catholic” Joe Biden? Chirp, chirp, chirp...
The bishops may not realize it, but this was done as a challenge to the Church. If they are silent now, they will never regain the right to speak. Obama and his handlers knew perfectly well what they were doing when they picked Biden.
In fact, if the bishops are silent now, we can expect to see the lawsuits start, against churches that refuse to “marry” gays, against Catholic institutions that won’t perform abortions, against, in short, any aspect of the Church that conflicts with the liberal fascist program. But then, most of the liberal bishops such as Wuerl and Neiderauer would probably be happy to opt out from Rome, take the property and form AmChurch, and then watch the handful of faithful Catholics get interned somewhere for their own good.

yeah....but then what will you line the cat box with?
Yeah... I guess being PC is more important than saving souls, L.A. Times?
There’s a picture all over the news today of Biden coming out of mass yesterday holding his granddaughter. First of all I think he should be denied communion, but perhaps I should not judge. One thing I would really like to know though is how would he have felt if his daughter in law decided she did not want that baby and had aborted her? How would you feel *not* being able to hold her? Would you still be in favor of “choice” then??
“.....former St. Louis Archbishop Raymond Burke...”
Dear Archbishop Burke:
Here in St. Louis we already greatly miss your courageous judmentalism, moral clarity and rigorous adherence to Church doctrine.
Please come back.
Oh, and keep giving the politically-correct, moral-equivalence liberals Hel...., I mean Heaven, yes give them Heaven.
I totally agree with your post. I also believe that it will pass when the Church will be required to marry homosexualsd or lose their tax ezempt status and they will be required to perform abortions at Catholic hospitals, etc., etc. And, the Catholic Church themselves are at fault; they should have been screaming from the rooftops about abortion and pro-abortion candidates. Most of the big cities above the Mason-Dixon line are Democrat and Catholic and I ask where have the bishops, archbishops, cardinals been? Haven’t said a word.

Well, you’re probably the last FReeper who still subscribes to the LAT. LOL
.....former St. Louis Archbishop Raymond Burke...
They got it wrong. He is emeritus Archbishop Emeritus of St. Louis.
“Bishops who work in the Vatican as administrators or diplomats and who therefore don’t head their own dioceses, or sees, have an extinct diocese attached to their title. But Bertone told Burke he would not receive an extinct see. Rather, he would become the emeritus archbishop of St. Louis “to my great joy,” Burke said.”
What can I say, they’ve got a good Sports section!
I too think this is one of the areas the left is going to hit first. The bishops should just be willing to lose the tax exempt status - it's not worth selling your soul for.
Sorry, I haven’t heard any bishop, even Bp. Saltarelli (Biden’s own bishop, who is opposed to the general idea of “pro-abortion Catholic politicians”) say anything about Biden or imply in any way that he should not go to Communion or that he would not be a suitable choice for Catholic voters.
Yea, well you can read it for free online...
I canceled the LAT years ago when they published on the front page a doctored photo of an American Soldier standing over an Iraqi.

There are an awful lot of “seamless garment/social justice” bishops out there.
Unfortunately - it appears that bishops like Burke, i.e. Bishops actually willing to go out on a limb and publicly fight for the unborn - are in the minority.
There are a whole lot of cultural democrat catholics who just don’t want to think about abortion (don’t want to be “one issue” voters)
I would like to be proven wrong - but look around. What do you see?
That's pretty shameless and cynical pandering on the part of the press! Incidentally, there's nothing wrong with "judging" - that's what a properly formed conscience is for. Biden advocates and votes for laws that support and promote abortion; his actions are wrong, they mislead Catholics on a very important part of Catholic teaching, and they lead to the death of the innocent. I don't think there's any problem with judging that!
