ER, Colorado (CNN) -- The last place Kathy Archuleta could have ever imagined she'd spend the first night of the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado, was at a happy hour sponsored by the Republican Party.
But the 54-year-old Democrat joined several other Hillary Clinton supporters, along with volunteers and officials from John McCain's campaign, at a Happy Hour for Hillary.
The event, sponsored by the Republican National Committee and approved by the McCain campaign, was a chance for McCain and Clinton supporters to come together for one cause: their opposition to Barack Obama's candidacy.
"Four years ago, if you said we'd be at a Hillary happy hour at the DNC, I would have called you crazy. But today is a great opportunity for people who ... agree that Sen. Barack Obama doesn't have the experience to be president of the United States," said McCain campaign regional communications director Tom Kise.
As Michelle Obama was delivering her "One Nation" unity speech on the convention floor several blocks away, more than 100 people gathered at the Paramount Café in downtown Denver.
In a side room, both groups of supporters discussed politics, sports and the convention while sipping cocktails and munching on tacos and a cheese spread.
But there was nothing unified for these Clinton supporters who walked across the aisle or, in this case, the cafe Monday night.
Archuleta, who hails from Denver, has been a registered Democrat all her life -- until now.

I don't agree with dems much, but Michelle's speech live, I can read or watch it later, vs cocktails and tacos, I'd probably opt for tacos.
The sad part is, there isn’t much difference between McCain & Her Shrillness.
“The most recent McCain ad involves the famous Hillary Clinton “3 a.m.” spot and will be aired during the convention. The 30-second spot uses footage from Clinton’s original ad and declares, “Hillary’s right.”
Wow.
Come together alrighty, but just make sure it is in a SWING STATE!!!
At first, I didn’t like the idea of John McCain as the GOP nominee. But our field was so lame this year; the only decent candidates didn’t run hard, or got no traction.
However, McCain is winning me over. Mostly because of how he is running his campaign. His commercials, his strategy, his presence at appearances. He’s hammering Obama and Obama’s wheels are coming off. If Obama doesn’t find the tow truck to pull his head out, this could be a landslide of epic proportions.
Would not be surprised if Juanito picks Hillary for VP...
Socialists in the RAT party toasting McCain. What a ringing endorsement! It’s more proof the Republicrat party is growing every day.
...after Lieberman turns him down?
Right, other than foreign affairs, taxes, spending, health care, immigration, and a few other issues, there isn’t much difference.
Republicans can make common cause with Hillary supporters without even being disingenuous. It’s in both their interests to defeat Obama. If McCain wins, 2012 is up for grabs, and the Republicans know this. The question is, how many of her supporters are more loyal to her than to their party?
Is that a Reagan quote? He was famous for not wanting any votes from dems either. And look what he did to the GOP!
That said, most of these people will pull the D lever.
Not most, but some. There's also the fact that Obama/Biden, 1/3, are as far left as the dems could go, since Ted is #2 on the liberal scale. Not all dems are hard left, which is why Republican Presidents are often elected, despite dem majoritys in the House.
McCain isn't getting the support of conservatives (rightly so, I might add), so he might as well pick someone as his VP who is philosophically in the same place. Hillary, Al Gore, Joe Lieberman, John Edwards, John Kerry any one of them would compliment McCain and get him the votes he needs.
The best part of this is, it’s taking an old Democratic tactic and using it against Obama.
How many times have we seen the “disenchanted republican caller” on a television or radio talk show? You know, the one who claims he/she is a lifelong Republican, but is absolutely voting Democrat this year because the GOP has become too (insert talking point here)? IMHO, that’s what’s going on here.
Some of the Hillary supporters may indeed vote for McCain, but I think the greater objective of this exercise is to weaken Obama’s position by reinforcing the image that he can’t seal the deal with his own party.
If he did that he’d be a shoe in.
But can a Republican pick a Democrat for a vp spot?
Oops, forgot how all the Republicans would NOT vote for him then, heheheh.
There is a silver lining, it will allow you to complain about the Republicans for another decade.
Pray for W and Our Troops
Yup, it is called FREEDOM OF SPEECH....you don’t like it too bad...
