DENVER -- House Republicans are demanding that Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) apologize for her recent comments on abortion, saying they mangle Catholic Church doctrine.
The letter comes just a day after Archbishop Donald Wuerl, for the second time in a week, slapped down the Speaker's theological explanation for her support of abortion rights.
Pelosi, a Catholic, said on Sundays edition of Meet the Press that the moment of conception has long been an issue of controversy in the Catholic Church. In a highly unusual move, Wuerl publicly corrected Pelosi on doctrine, and New York Archbishop Edward Cardinal Egan said he was shocked by her comments.
Egan said, What the Speaker had to say about theologians and their positions regarding abortion was not only misinformed; it was also, and especially, utterly incredible in this day and age. ... Anyone who dares to defend that they may be legitimately killed because another human being chooses to do so or for any other equally ridiculous reason should not be providing leadership in a civilized democracy worthy of the name.
Now, a group of 19 Catholic Republican House members are also expressing their outrage. In a letter sent to Pelosi, they write, [Y]our erroneous claim about the history of the Churchs opposition to abortion is false and denigrates our common Faith.
They point out that in 1679, the Church unequivocally said it is in an error for Catholics to believe fetuses do not have a soul.
The Republicans' letter concludes, To reduce the scandal and consternation caused amongst the faithful by your remarks, we necessarily write to you to correct the public record and affirm the Churchs actual and historical teaching that defends the sanctity of human life. We hope that you will rectify your errant claims and apologize for misrepresenting the Churchs doctrine and misleading fellow Catholics.
Pelosi spokesman Brendan Daly issued a statement Tuesday in which the Speaker stood by her comments. He said that not all Catholics believe that life begins at conception and cited St. Augustine, who said, "The law does not provide that the act [abortion] pertains to homicide, for there cannot yet be said to be a live soul in a body that lacks sensation."
Wuerl blasted Pelosis statement, saying the philosophical discussion of St. Augustines time is not relevant today.
In his statement, Daly also said, The Speaker agrees with the Church that we should reduce the number of abortions. She believes that can be done by making family planning more available, as well as by increasing the number of comprehensive age-appropriate sex education and caring adoption programs.
Asked for comment on the House Republican letter, Daly referred to Tuesdays statement.
The GOP members who signed the letter are: Thaddeus McCotter (Mich.), John Boehner (Ohio), Steve Chabot (Ohio), Virginia Foxx (N.C.), Phil Gingrey (Ga.), Peter King (N.Y.), Steve King (Iowa), Daniel Lungren (Calif.), Devin Nunes (Calif.), John Sullivan (Okla.), Patrick Tiberi (Ohio), Phil English (Pa.), Jean Schmidt (Ohio), Jim Walsh (N.Y.), Jeff Fortenberry (Neb.), Michael McCaul (Texas), Paul Ryan (Wis.), Walter Jones (N.C.) and Mike Ferguson (N.J.).
With the advent of modern technology and medical ultrasound it is clear that even a 4-5 week old ‘fetus’ with apparant heartbeat and limb bud formations prove it is clearly is in human form. That Pelosi and her ilk would deny this proves that they are grossly ignorant or deceptively disingenuous—probably the latter of the two.
Pelosi needs to quit while she’s behind. She’s digging herself a huge hole here.
I understand the Obama people want her to shut up, before she puts a big crimp in their little party.

Here’s a fuller version of the Cardinal’s comments. He really opened a whup on her!
This woman is the best living breathing argument FOR abortion!
However God does love her, hates her ways, but love’s her.
When I am witness to these people it just emphasizes to me how awesome Christs sacrifice was. It would be hard but possible to die for someone you care for. But to die for people that spend every second of there lives to undermine your teachings is nothing short of heavenly grace.
That dim bulb doesn't even realize what she is flirting with. St. Thomas defines heresy: "a species of infidelity in men who, having professed the faith of Christ, corrupt its dogmas". A dogma is now understood to be a truth appertaining to faith or morals, revealed by God, transmitted from the Apostles in the Scriptures or by tradition, and proposed by the Church for the acceptance of the faithful. She is tip-toeing out on thin ice. She needs to think about what she is doing to her soul through her willful service to a fallen angel.
Could we quit with the apology-demanding, already? If Congresscritters apologized for everything they were Totally Dead Wrong about, they’d hardly have time to pass legislation (good!) or breathe (has potential ...).
If they want to issue a statement saying that they’re embarassed that such an ignorant and evil person is Speaker, then have it.
While debate and discussion are helpful for everyone’s understanding, I have to wonder what does it take to be told you are no longer a member of a Catholic church? Obviously, Pelosi crossed a line the Church has rather painstakingly and unequivocally drawn, is repeatedly rebuked and then tells them through her spokesperson (because it is beneath her to tell them herself?) that it is not she, but rather the Church who is mistaken. Have things changed in the Catholic Church? They used to be rather strict about such things.
Thanks for the link.
That pig wrapped in a diaper ain’t never going to
apology. (ò¿ó)
Pelosi should go on speaking as she appears like a true unreliable lying liberal
plastic face has succeeded in angering Cardinal Eagan enough to speak out. That’s some tricket. A Burke or a Chaput he aint.
I’m stoutly resisting a temptation to write a theological, philosophical, legal and scientific refutation of the Speaker’s intellectually incompetent remarks.
All I can say is, “Keep talking, Mrs. Pelosi, keep talking. In fact, get on a talk show with Joe Biden and get him to join you in elaboratating on the theme. It’ll be so, so enlightening to us all.”

What is that in the Bible where it says that there is a two-horned (Senate and House) seven-headed beast (Congress) that is ridden by a woman/harlot (in other words, her truth is gone, she will work the men for money). The bible goes on and on in Rev 13 to describe lobbyists, and the seven headed beast (the seven mountains...hills?...houses? Senate, House, Treasury, ...??? Anyway...the antichrist comes next after the faithful are mocked (by the MSM?).
