San Franciscos Catholic mayor will join tomorrow in the official launching of the No on 8 Equality for All Campaign at the old Tower Records store on Market Street.
In early January, on the occasion of his inauguration to a second term, Mayor Gavin Newsom and his family attended a Mass at the historic Mission Dolores Basilica. And to this day he continues to describe himself as Catholic.
Newsom, said to have his eyes on the governorship, will be acting in open defiance of Californias bishops, who have officially endorsed Proposition 8 and have urged Catholics to support it.
But Newsom is no stranger to defiance of Church teachings or to thumbing his nose at prelates. It was Newsom who provoked a constitutional crisis in 2004 by granting marriage licenses to 4,000 same-sex couples in a case that eventually led to the May 15 California Supreme Court decision upholding same-sex marriages. Proposition 8 would undo that 4-3 ruling by amending the state constitution.
In 2006, the divorced San Francisco mayor, who describes himself as a lifelong Catholic, abruptly cancelled a trip to Rome for the installation of former San Francisco Archbishop William Levada as head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Newsom said at the time that he decided to boycott Levadas installation in protest over the Churchs prohibition on homosexuals adopting children.
In a February 2008 interview with The Santa Clara, the magazine of his Jesuit-run alma mater, Santa Clara University, Newsom said he still has tremendous admiration for the Church and very strong faith.

Catholic is an adjective derived from the Greek adjective 'καθολικός' / 'katholikos', meaning "general" or "universal" [1] In the context of Christian ecclesiology it has a rich history and several usages. Roman Catholics use the term "Catholic Church" to refer to the Church, whether Western or Eastern, in full communion with the Bishop of Rome. Protestants use it to refer to the entire body of believers in Jesus Christ.
Part of the entire body of believers in Jesus Christ (Catholic): Yes.
In "full communion with the Bishop of Rome" (Roman Catholic): No.
In my Post #9 (my first post to this thread) I asked the question as to why the Roman Catholic church had not bounced heretics, such as Mr. Newsom, from their ranks. My intent was for them to do so - for the church's own good - as well as for the heretics' own good (it doesn't help them to live a delusion) -- it wasn't to have them join 'my' church - if they insist on remaining unrepentant and unwashed.
It was just a suggestion. By all means -- if you want them as they are (unrepentant, and no desire to repent) - please keep them...
What are you some kind of nut? So I spelled hypocritical wrong, I was always one of the most stupid kids at St James Boys School and Archbishop Riordan High School in San Francisco back in the ‘40’s and 50’s. Some of the Brothers who taught me gave me brain damage too, punching me around like they did....
The Holy Spirit must be watching over me though because I still go to mass, communion , and confession.....
I still think that many Catholic Bishop’s priests, and religious are hypocritical rubbing elbows with the likes of people like Biden, Pelosi, and others and not calling them down in public for their horrible actions supporting abortion and gay marriage.
I figure that the Holy Spirit still loves me too
Like I said at our KofC meeting last night, “We are are at the Florence and Normandie of a spiritual war”
RD
“What are you some kind of nut?”
You must be looking in the mirror. LMAO
Bring back the Crusade, but this time to SF “newsounce” & “peelousy”.
I thought Newsom was an atheist.
He definitely isn’t a Catholic at all. He is a CINO Catholic In Name Only.
Niedrauer needs to send him a letter too.
He can attend Mass, he just can’t receive Communion. He must go to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, repenet of his sins, and promise to change his ways to receive Communion.
I really don’t think that will happen, do you? BTW are you a Catholic?
so you are saying that you are catholic with a small ‘c’ meaning universal. Many proptestants could fall under that category.
But you are also saying that you are NOT a Catholic with a capital ‘C’.
Am I correct?
Exactly what church/denomination do you attend then?
So what, Mayor Gavin says, “I’m being faithful to the ‘social justice’ and ‘common good’ message of my Church, and we are all sinners are we not”; which liberal Catholics like him are very well versed and educated in.
I tried to answer this in Post #22 (kellyna had the same question). My intent wasn't so much to be cryptic - but I didn't think it was germane to the original post (i.e., my suggestion that Mr. Newsom should get the 'boot' from the church), and I hadn't intended to get into interdenominational discussions. But essentially you are correct. From my Post #22:
The Wikipedia definition looks close enough, and is convenient for cut and paste:
Catholic is an adjective derived from the Greek adjective 'καθολικός' / 'katholikos', meaning "general" or "universal" [1] In the context of Christian ecclesiology it has a rich history and several usages. Roman Catholics use the term "Catholic Church" to refer to the Church, whether Western or Eastern, in full communion with the Bishop of Rome. Part of the entire body of believers in Jesus Christ (Catholic): Yes.
In "full communion with the Bishop of Rome" (Roman Catholic): No.
Which church/denomination do I attend? Currently an independent Baptist church. Based on sermons I've heard, and from what I've read on their website, I'd prefer the Free Presbyterian Church -- however there aren't any in California, let alone the SF Bay Area.
God Bless.
I guess I just wanted to see it in your words rather than wiki’s. They are too far left for me to trust them. I use them to look something up now and then, but I go further and verify with another source.
Amazing results.
No I do not think he will nor do I think any of these “liberal” politicians.
Yes.
Good luck with that. Many old-time Democrats would vote for the Antichrist manifest to the world as long as he were a Democrat. My former landlord was a FDR worshiper, and all my verifiable arguments of what modern Democrats support - abortion on demand, homo-"marriage", higher taxes on everyone, confiscation of property, etc. - just went in one ear and out the other. He was completely blind to the facts. It was like talking to someone with a mental illness. And he was fairly conservative in his world-view!
