Whether or not Sarah Palin wins, for American women, politics will never be the same again, says Anne Applebaum.
.....The interest in her (Palin) and her life story is no fluke, either. Following the failure of Hillary Clintons campaign, Palin is suddenly, and flamboyantly, the most prominent female politician in the country. At age 44, she is also the most prominent representative of her generation of women a generation which already looks set to be different, in important ways, from its predecessors.
Unlike Hillary and her contemporaries, the women of Palins generation are not feminists, but rather post-feminist. Born at the very tail end of the baby boom or after it had ended, the post-feminists grew up in a world in which the revolutions of the Sixties sexual as well as political were already taken for granted....
....More to the point, they want to know how she (Palin) does it while appearing utterly unbothered by the conflict at all so much so that she fired the chef in the Alaska governors mansion, on the grounds that her children ought to learn how to make their own sandwiches. She has described switching between breast pump and BlackBerrys (note the use of the plural; she has two BlackBerrys) in the middle of the night, and there are photographs of her at her desk, baby Trig beside her. And all of this without looking at all frazzled, or badly groomed, or distressed. She positively radiates self-discipline and organisational skills, waving her freshly manicured nails, moving rapidly in high heels.

Right about the Clinton foreign policy debacles. Gov. Palin is NOT a Clinton, and the President on the ticket is McCain, who does have extensive foreign policy and military knowledge and experience. Sarah Heath Palin is cut of the same cloth as Margaret Thatcher who, while she had no foreign policy experience, had the sense to have knowledgeable people advising her as well as common sense. PM Thatcher fought off socialism for a long time; but in the final analysis, it takes people not wanting socialism to hold it back. Palin fights corruption and IS good in energy, with entrenched corruption in Washington being largely what’s wrong in Washington.
I certainly wasn’t saying Bill Clinton did anything but diddle and make a mess on anything. I was just citing a Democrat example. Neither would Obama or Biden, or Hillary Clinton for that matter. What do you suggest? Lieberman? A recipe for disaster ticket; they floated the idea.
Agreed, there was no Hillary Era. There were endless months when the Clinton Machine had her sucking the very air out of whatever room she found herself. She is such a sociopath.
Governor Palin enters the room and turns on the light. Suddenly, we know that we no longer have to endure the sordid conditions that the Liberals were dictating to us.
Yes, we have challenges, but the liberal solution is not the only way to fix them, and the conservative side now has a voice.
The Hillary Era represents the political darkness that extended from the end of Reagan's term to the present. To be sure, the name isn't entirely accurate since Hillary wasn't to blame for GHWB's lack of vision, but now that Mrs. Palin has brought light again, the darkness is being dispelled.
Judgment comes from experience. Experience comes from poor judgment.
A “Husband who doesn’t appear to be entirely fully employed” and has time for snowmobile races - Todd Palin gave up his job with BP because his wife was fighting with the oil companies. He finished the 2000 mile snowmobile race with a broken arm because he needed the money, a $ 40,000 prize. He’s a good man, secure in his skin.
McCain emphasized her role as the commander in chief of the Alaska National Guard but reality is Palin has never personally ordered the state guard to do anything
Like I said, clueless. You might want to recall that it was an actor with no foreign policy or national security experience that faced down the Russian bear. My guess is that you object because she's a woman. So was Margaret Thatcher and Golda Meir.
NATO: No 'business as usual' with Moscow August 19, 2008
Flights by Russian Tu-95 "Bear" bombers into what the United States considers its "defensive air space" have notably increased during the past six months, U.S. officials have said. The Russian planes have been challenged by Alaska-based F-22s and F-15s and escorted in the other direction without incident, officials said.
Alright. Change the question. I can deal with that.
Who knew that JFK would not complete his term of office when he was elected? What foreign policy experience did LBJ have as VP at the time he was chosen as his running mate?
And for that matter, outside of having fought in WWII, what foreign policy experience did JFK himself have, when he won the nomination for president?
We know from history that neither of these men were very effective in the area of foreign policy. That was a failing of their character more than anything else. When life and death choices were before them, they blanched, and either made choices which only barely succeeded, or failed miserably.
Harry Truman, on the other hand, did much better than those two successors because he was made of different stuff. Even he didn't choose right on every foreign policy decision. Eastern Europe suffered under the communist grip until nearly the end of the century because Harry got Stalin wrong. Yet he was able to make the correct choice about using the A-bomb. I ask you, what foreign policy experience did Harry Truman have, prior to becoming president?
The answer to all these questions, is that these men were not elected for their foreign policy experience, which quite frankly, outside of the post of Secretary of State, is pretty hard to come by for any politician.
The whole "but what about her foreign policy experience?" question is a straw man argument, designed to throw the focus off our VP candidate's very real qualifications.
The more important questions to be asking, are whether the candidates have proven track records of good management under pressure, and of making correct and beneficial decisions for their constituents. Have they demonstrated character and honesty in their public service and private industry careers? These are far better indicators of what they'll do and how they'll perform as leaders.
By every objective measure, Gov. Sarah Palin passes those tests with stellar grades. You and every other fence-sitting Republican ought to be thanking your lucky stars that we've been blessed with such an incredible leader.
How do you know he's a Republican? He a trash talking noob.
Great points.
Wrong! She recently order the Alaska guard to help with the huricane Gustov.
I think you wandered onto the wrong forum.
That bucket of water had a name, and that name was Sarah Palin. Hillary, and the ClintonCo. Crime Cartel, are sooooo '90's now...
the infowarrior
She may have hopes, but those hopes are likely to be dashed on the hard rocks of reality in '12. I expect her to run, but, I likewise expect her to do about as well as John Edwards did this year. Clinton is the 20th century, and Palin is the 21st. The "old guard" *will* give way to the new "vanguard" whether they like it, or not...
the infowarrior
Read through his posts on the thread, and I think you'll see it's a fair assumption.
I wouldn't call it "trash talking". It sounds more like severely uninformed worry on his part, or poor analysis due to, again, lack of data.
Hard to see how any person reading FR could be so uninformed, but that's the only sense I can make from those posts.
She has to at least keep her big toe in the dirty water.
Palin has command rank in the A.N.G.
Because Alaska borders with Russia, the ANG has a very big role to play in National Defense, with budget and training commensurate with that duty. So Palin's role as a commander is far more comprehensive that that of say, the governor of Iowa. She has to be in the loop for security briefing on Russian air, sea and land military activity, Sat Intel, and the like. And she has to make sure that the ANG is fully staffed and that recruitment is up to par, and that the force is ready to hold off the Russians long enough for a federal military response.
That is a lot more responsibility than Obama or Biden have ever had on their shoulders.

Palin has command military rank, and she has the duty.
LOL Joe Biden is a stooge
Funny how NOBODY mentions his speech.
Ratings numbers for McCain,Palin and Obama’s speech have all been compared.
Wonder what old Joe got? hehe
Thanks, Candor7.
The MSM has no clue about the guard or how it works.
