"This releases an enormous amount of energy that liberates thousands of quarks and gluons normally imprisoned inside the nucleus. Quarks and gluons then form a kind of thick soup that we call the quark-gluon plasma."

If this little M-F suddenly shows up, we are all SO screwed:

My husband has been anxiously awaiting this - almost to the point of obsession. He starts talking about it and my eyes glaze over.

This will be the biggest non-event since Y2K.

The pride and the arrogance of certain scientists who think that THEY will be the ones to find out the secret of the universe! One more particle. One more string. One more element in the theory and eureka we’ll have it!

Your attitude is disgusting and is precisely why Europe is building the LHC and why China's economy is growing at astronomical rates, while American students can't get into American graduate schools.

You apparently want to let others do the thinking for Americans.

I’ve read this a couple times over the last year and still see no value in this experiment...what a waste of money.

That's precisely what critics of atomic physics were saying in the 1930s. Fortunately, Adolf Hitler agreed with you and Franklin Roosevelt didn't.

Good post. Those folks have stopped thinking a long time ago. A book tells them all they need to know. Why investigate anything?

OK, I gotta ask. How can recreating the “Big Bang” benefit mankind?

By contributing enormously to our understanding of quantum physics. If you use a computer or consume electricity, this just might be important.

Much ado about nothing, for two reasons. First, the test on Wednesday only fires particles in one direction. There will be no collisions that might trigger a black hole or the other fears some have expressed. Second, everyone knows that the end of the world is schedule for Dec. 21, 2012 so obviously there’s nothing to worry about right now.

Why do you say this is a remarkably bad idea? Because they might find something that we don’t already know exists?

Because it will create a whole new universe of stuff. Lots and lots of stuff. If it is a bad universe full of bad stuff we can ship the liberal/progressive hippies off to it.

Thanks Army Air Corps. Historically, the "Marge Hadron Collider" was a failure, and obviously was further along in the alphabet. Okay, so, I'm not makin' sense now. What else is new?

I would suggest reading Hyperspace: A Scientific Odyssey Through Parallel Universes, Time Warps, and the 10th Dimension.

Most of the work is to develop a unified theory about gravity, forces, etc. This is what Einstein was working on after relativity until his death.
