A Tangled Story of Addiction

Consequences of Cindy McCain's Drug Abuse Were More Complex Than She Has Portrayed

By Kimberly Kindy

Washington Post Staff Writer

Friday, September 12, 2008; A01

When Cindy McCain is asked what issues she would champion as first lady, she often cites one of the most difficult periods of her life: her battle with -- and ultimate victory over -- prescription painkillers. Her struggle, she has said repeatedly, taught her valuable lessons about drug abuse that she would pass on to the nation.

"I think it made me a better person as well as a better parent, so I think it would be very important to talk about it and be very upfront about it," McCain said in an interview with "Access Hollywood." In an appearance on the "Tonight Show With Jay Leno," she said she tries "to talk about it as much as possible because I don't want anyone to wind up in the shoes that I did at the time."

In describing her struggle with drugs, McCain has said that she became addicted to Vicodin and Percocet in early 1989 after rupturing two disks and having back surgery. She has said she hid her addiction from her husband, Sen. John McCain, and stopped taking the painkillers in 1992 after her parents confronted her. She has not discussed what kind of treatment she received for her addiction, but she has made clear that she believes she has put her problems behind her.

This is nearly 20 years old... and its relevant to the current election, now exactly?

THIS is what the DUmmies were wetting themselves over?

THIS is the bombshell that was going to “END” the McCain campaign?

(seriously....some “lonestar” nut on DU was teasing the DUmmies about this story for days, saying when it came out, it would DESTROY McCain.)

And this is IT?

This is ALL they have?

15-year old recycled “news”?

It smells like desperation.

Cindy is so silly. With her good looks she could have become an actress. Then she could have snorted boatloads of cocaine like Robert Downey Jr. and the press would have left her alone. Left here alone? Hell, she would have been a darling of the media. She could have trashed the U.S. non-stop for decades like Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, or that Richard Gere and the media would have heralded her brilliance.

Instead she cleaned up her act and supports good clean living. No wonder the Post thinks she’s a class I bitch.

I’m still trying to figure out who is running against Cindy. Is Cindy running for anything? Oh that’s right, she’s a family member. I forget that people like Chelsea are off limits and people like Cindy and Sarah’s children are fair game.

Silly me.

I wondered how long it would take the MSM to trot this out. It’s already been disclosed, but no matter.

But of course Barry did a little “blow” when he had the money.

Nope. Its like Todd Palin's DUI. They are just recycling old dirt. Nothing that would reflect on who these people are today. We all make mistakes we regret. But we do become better persons for having gone through some tough times in our lives. The sleaze is just disgusting!

I’m sure women now paying attention to the election because of Palin will find this piece “charming”.

We’ve already forgotten about the NY Times accusing McCain of an affair right after he secured the nomination.

The funny thing about liberals is that they believe their own lies about the right.
They thought they had a grand-slam with the pregnant 17 year old, they though the right would disown them in droves. Those puritannical, judgemental, cruel bible-thumpers. Liberals are still trying to figure out how Republicans have so many kids since they only have sex once or twice a year.

The guy who was contacted is a disgruntled former employee of the McCains with an axe to grind. That's the Washington Post's source for the story. They covered this back in 2000 and they're bringing it up again in a blatant attempt to influence the outcome of the election!

I don't believe this story has a chance of gaining any traction.

If the average voter can't be sympathetic towards people who become addicted to painkillers after suffering chronic pain, then there really is no hope for this country.

I know the hard-core extremists went after Rush for this, but I think the rest of the people understood.

I think people will see right through it. The media is so partisan that people just dismiss anything they write about the Palins or the McCains even if it is true because its politically motivated to inflict damage upon them. Let the MSM/Drivebys keeping right on digging!

Thanks for the background. I think the Democrats are playing out a very stupid game here. They have made Palin into a hero of sorts, and the public is not buying off on their treachery.

I guess all we should say at this point, is thanks Democrats. We couldn’t have done it without you.

Palin would have been a nice addition to the McCain team, but by now she would have become an accepted part of the ticket, very nice but not still a headline. The Democrats are keeping her in the headlines daily, and it’s paying off in spades for us.

First Hillary, then Geraldine, then Sarah, then Sarah’s 17 year old daughter, then Sarah again, and now Cindy. See a pattern?

How about we let some reporters delve into Obama’s drug use? But that was a long time ago. And his case was different....liberals always make excuses for themselves.

Betty Ford turned her problem, once treated at the Naval Hospital in Long Beach, CA into an opportunity.

She founded “The Betty Ford Center” to help others.

It is highly regarded for treatment and recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.

http://www.bettyfordcenter.org/

I have no problem that Cindy McCain once got into trouble with prescription pain killers. Further I have no problem that she chooses to be private about it.

A major aspect of recovery is anonymity, which of course the high profile folks don’t get to enjoy.

Many in high positions have had problems. There are daily AA meetings for members of Congress and staff.

Those who have had family members with problems understand the seriousness of addiction.

Once upon a time, the media steered clear of this topic, out of respect for the “anonymity” traditions of the 12 Step programs which started with AA in the 1930s.

No longer does American journalism respect anything, whatsoever except their own unjustified self-importance.

I believe the smears of Gov. Palin’s and Sen. McCain’s family will backfire.

The pig hiding behind lipstick is their unqualified candidate.

All I know is Cindy showed up at the 9/11 ceremony today with great respect, humility, and grace and Michelle was no where to be seen.
