Metro Link train in flames...dozens of ambulances en-route to the scene...
MSNBC Flash says Los Angeles
Sending prayers for all those involved here.
A Metrolink commuter train and a freight train have collided in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles.
One car of the Metrolink train has derailed along with what appears to be the engine of the freight.
Footage of the Friday afternoon collision was broadcast from a KABC-TV helicopter over the scene.
Chatsworth in the San Fernando Valley
2 Fatalities so far
Metrolink and freight train hit head on apparently
Info from the local Fox channel
Ouch. I’ve ridden on that particular Metrolink only once, but I take a commuter train every day here in Seattle. The possibility of the Sounder colliding with an Amtrak or freight train is very real.
Odd the LA Times online doesn’t have it yet.
I’m guessing the two fatalities were the engineers...?
Another reason I don’t ride in the lead car when I take the train.
Prayers up for all involved...
Have you heard about this?
I would suspect because the front of the Metrolink is smashed in and ripped open. The car is on its side.
It's a bad news day in so many ways.
I just saw a better picture of it.
I appears to be a head on collision between the Metrolink and the freight train.
The force of the impact drove the first car of the Metrolink back into the the car behind it. It looks like approximately 50 feet.
It appears as if the first car of the Metrolink primarily pushed back into the upper deck section of the second train.
The first two cars of the Metrolink are on their side.
The freight train engine is on its side and the cars behind it are scattered.
Prayers lifted for all involved.
Oh, that looks awful! Prayers going up for the victims.
Metrolink Train Collides Head-On With Freight Train
A Metrolink train collided head on with a freight train in Chatsworth just before 4:30 this afternoon, causing one of the cars on the Metrolink train to turn over on its side. The train was heading west at the time. According to a live report on KCBS there are 20-25 people who are injured, and of them 10 are critically injured and 3 require extrication. Emergency personnel are on the scene right now.
okay, just what were you up to here??
NBC739 in San Diego has a live video stream. It is pretty graphic though as it is raw video.
I just turn to local news WHOAAAAAA
I smellllll big lawsuit against Both Metrolink and Union pacific JUST SAYIN
Ride Metrolink from time to time (not that line).
Can visualize teh interior of that right now and it isn’t a pretty image.
I’m watching the FOX stream that was posted on a previous post. It looks just awful.
Injured are being triaged onto green, yellow and red blankets. Red of course, being the most critically injured.
This is Chatsworth near the 2nd tunnel....UP freight into Metrolink passenger train...15 fatals, 80 need transport.....a big clusterf*c* in the NE Valley.
All LAPD, CHP, LAFD resources taxed.
Oh wow. Thanks, Karl.
God bless our first responders too, this will be a rough one for them.
Early reports that UP had a green light eastbound....hence the pancaking of cars behind it (faster speed) and the Metrolink ran a red leaving WB from the Chatsworth station.
on bars now with tone :-(.
Just heard - “back up” of freight cars still in the tunnel. This could of been much worse by a minute or two. Prayers up.
At least 2 people were killed -- and scores injured -- Friday afternoon when a Metrolink commuter train crashed into a freight train in Chatsworth.
Reporting overhead in Sky 9, Gary Lineberry said it was a "real mess. And it's a bad one...no doubt about that."
The freight train looked accordioned. Several cars on the freight train derailed. Several cars of the commuter train overturned.
At least two people were killed, according to the LA Sheriff's Department. Casualties are expected to mount.
Tim Lynn reporting overhead in Chopper 2 said the crash was "head on." He added, "We saw people crawling out of the train trying to escape flames. The fire department immediately got into rescue mode."
Just looking at the aftermath Lynn said, "this crash had to be horrific."
The crash occured near Topanga Boulevard about 4:40 p.m.
The most serious injuries are believed to be in the front car of the Metrolink train.
Some people were believed trapped.
Rescue teams were on hand to extricate at least three people from the overturned cars, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The Los Angeles Police Department called a citywide tactical alert in response to the crash.
I’ve been following it on the CHP Incident page.

“Metrolink 111 meets the Leesdale Local”
(Could it be this is the “local” with which today’s collision occurred?)
Also for reference:
A Ride on Metrolink Train 111 to Moorpark on 3/27/08
Fox Channel 11 broadcasting live — horse veterinarian went into treat patients. Still calling for paramedics and equipment, still taking off people. And this is 2 1/2 hours since the crash. Severe trauma. Getting ready for press conference later.
I’ve been watching that. I saw a body being lowered. The camera panned away.
Head on collision at speed between Metrolink passenger and UP freight trains. Very bad.
At least 6 dead now. One picture showed about 40 ambulances lined up waiting for the wounded. Very, very bad.
Yeah, I noticed there is only one set of tracks thru there. It’s a big sweeping curve.
Appears to have been a head on collision initially.
Just saw them taking someone out of the train not much movement from the person :-(( Now just two more ... Prayers for all ...
