HPV Vaccine Required of Immigrants, but not Citizens
FOX8 News ^ | 03 Sep 2008 | ROXANNA HAYNES

A single dose of Gardasil costs $162, and a complete vaccination requires three doses.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) -- In order to become a permanent, legal resident of the U.S., immigrants now must receive a vaccine that is not required of U.S. citizens.

The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine -- known as Gardasil -- is one of five the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services recently added to the required list. The vaccine works to prevent cervical cancer, the leading cause of cancer death in women worldwide.

Ginky-Lee Torres, an immigration lawyer, questions the government's decision to impose requirements on immigrants that go above and beyond those on citizens.

"If the government is trying to take care of everyone, they should be doing it also with the citizens," she said. "However, they don't have the power to impose on you as a citizen what vaccination you have."

Immigrans must also get vaccines that protect against meningitis and chicken pox, which are highly contagious. HPV is not.

Nya Flomo, who works with refugees, says the requirement is aimed at protecting women who come from countries where access to the vaccine is limited or nonexistent.

At $162 per dose, the three-dose vaccine is expensive. "It's a financial burden, in addition to every other burden they have financially in the applications," said Torres.

Isn't Gardasil the same drug that Gov. Perry of Texas attempted to mandate in Texas?

It sure sounds like the manufacturer of that drug has managed to buy sufficient politicians to mandate the use of their drug.

As I understand it, Gardasil can (may) reduce the risk of cervical cancer for women, but it should be administered prior to the female having sex.

Unlike chicken pox (which is mentioned in the article)which is contagious and can be widely spread, cervical cancer is a unique risk, generally to females who have multiple partners.

The mandate for Gardisil is for corporate interest.

Some government bureaucrat has the power to decide such things. That's not a free country.

This is about sexually transmitted diseases and the liberal need to encourage sex outside of marriage.

Bingo. You hit it right on the head. The drug company can’t convince people (women) to use this drug (which promotes promiscuity, let’s face it) especially since it’s long term side effects aren’t known, so they get the taxpayer (through US government mandate) to pay for it. Clever. No, rather deceitful, immoral and wrong. Reminds of the birth control product tests back in the 50’s that the US government allowed on unsuspecting women in Puerto Rico. The Margaret Sanger crowd is still going strong.

The mandate for Gardisil is for corporate interest.

The development of the vacine must be rewarded by laws which make it compulsory! Government sociology (force it to fund it) is often even worse than socialism (fund it). Where is the "freedom of choice"? It only applies to the slaughter of babies.

Somebody in DC has decided illegal immigrants (mostly Mexicans), indulge in sex early and often. Isn’t that racist thinking?

If Merck really wanted to help prevent cervical cancer (doubtful) they’d make it mandatory in 3rd world countries where the cervical cancer rate is actually high. It’s NOT in the US. Cervical cancer screenings, known as PAP smears are much more effective at detecting cervical cancer. Everyone should do some research and look at the stats.

Money and lobbyists hard at work creating public health policy.

Did you read the post? The issue is about legal immigrants from all over the world.
The vaccine is required of all females regardless of their sexual activity.
I don’t think Mexicans girls engage in sex any earlier in life than do our little darlings.

I thought it was only recommended for younger women? Is this Merck's way of testing it on older women who "don't matter as much," like the previously referenced poor Puerto Rican women who were unknowingly used as human guinea pigs and subjected to huge doses of contraceptive hormones?

per the CDC:

Why is the HPV vaccine only recommended for girls/women through age 26?

The vaccine has been widely tested in girls/women 9 through 26 years of age. New research is being done on the vaccine’s safety and efficacy in women older than 26 years of age. The FDA will consider licensing the vaccine for these women when there is enough research to show that it is safe and effective for them.

You’re probably correct in thinking that Mexicans girls don’t engage in sex any earlier in life than do our little darlings, em2vn, but I would like to point out that (Catholic?) Mexican girls do seem to persist in carrying to term and giving birth earlier than our little darlings do.

Yep. But this is just for those LEGALLY immigrating here. Gave this shot to a person 2 weeks ago that was legally immigrating here. Had not problem paying cash up front.
