Size starts to matter: Ohio gives McCain-Palin a big crowd
Pittsburgh Tribune Review ^ | September 16, 2008 | Salena Zito

VIENNA, OHIO -- You have to wonder with just 49 days left until election day, what is Sen. John McCain doing in Ohio's Mahoning Valley again?

It's not like there is a history of Republicans winning here. George W. Bush was only able to muster a little more than 36 percent of the vote in 2004, up 1 percent from 2000, when Bush went against Al Gore.

This rust-belt, blue-collar community with a heavy Democratic voter registration advantage has seen better times -- the steel industry is gone, replaced by a lower income service industry. The medium income hovers at $23,000 a year and nearly 30 percent of the residents live below the poverty line -- not exactly a Republican fertile area.

As long as the national race is within 5 points among likely voters (as it is right now when you add the roughly four point difference between likely voters and registered voters in the Gallup poll), I couldn’t agree more. And even if McCain expands his lead slightly beyond 5 points, I would avoid the additional states you mentioned except perhaps New Jersey, and even then only because of its proximity to Pennsylvania.

Bush made the almost fatal mistake of making a play for California, Oregon, and Washington in the last week of the 2000 election, while Gore spent his time in Pennsylvania and Florida. Let’s don’t repeat that mistake.

There’s a big banner link right at the top of the page, or you can go over to the right of the homepage under “Video”.

NY...maybe...NJ...too many 28 days zombies voting in NJ...

WA and OR, especially WA, is just to fraud ridden to even try.

There are a couple of close House Races in VA and MD...I’d love to see an appearance there but...

Bush made the fatal mistake of not disclosing his DUI months b4 the final weekend. He would have won handily had it not been for his stupidity in this matter.

What, he thought the MSM would give him a pass?

McCain and Palin should have a chicken, potato salad, bean dinner for $2.00......something we all love!!!!

That's actually a really good idea - sort of a Dan's Bakesale to counter this Streisand nonsense.

Would be a massive logistical nightmare to try to pull it off, though.

And a security nightmare - I imagine that the Secret Service would go ballistic if McCain started wandering around amongst the great unwashed masses at a 50,000 person picnic.

I think it’s a good idea to play on your opponent’s side of the field, if you can.

That field varies from state to state. It is better to spend resources in those states where the race is tight or close. Forget states like New York or New Jersey. And I don't think McCain is so stupid that he would spend much time in Kahlifohrneeya.

"Barack Obama says he's for equal pay for women, but women working in his Senate office earn an average of $9,000 less than men. By contrast, women in John McCain's Senate office actually earn an average of nearly $2,000 more than men.

I'll bet his 'sweeties' made a little more ...

Thank you for the prompt reply. This is really amazing. They go into a democratic strong hold and get a pretty good turn out. Biden on the other hand is in the area too, (don’t know if it’s a republican or dem precinct). I wouldn’t expect him to draw more than a couple hundred people.

The Obama Campaign is and was one of persona. Now that we have a race and more focus on the issues...his persona is falling apart.

I am not sure whether you are being literal or ironic. Perhaps you would like to expand your comment.

I agree. Going into New York would be cool! Esp if you can draw 30 or 40 thousand people...

I’m saying that a McCain/Palin ticket has a lot more to offer than Bush/Cheney. Bush never inspired anyone

All I can figure is: Sarah pulls in the Right votes, and McCain himself is RINO enough to be battling for the moderate and left wing votes, hoping to leave Obamarama with the far left votes.

Palin is a threefer. (1) She shores up the conservatives. (2) She helps with the female vote some and (3) She shows up at rallies with the "First Dude." Four time winner of 2000 mile Iron Dog race (snow mobile) across Alaska. She introduces him as a "Proud member of the United Steelworkers Union."

What demographic do you think she's going for in the rust belt? She and the First Dude are a dagger pointed straight at the rats hold on male, Reagan Democrats.

The average income is 23K; Obama’s minions are paying 28.5K just to have to dinner with the Messiah tonight. Quite telling huh...but Barry is all about saving the ‘little people.’

then mccain comes in, makes it clear that he does know what’s going on in wall street, then points out that Obama is in Hollywood with his friends.
hmmm was McCain reading my FR posts? :)
