Unless the guy physically removed his Computer or swaped Hard Drives then doubtful he cleaned all traces. Its a lot harder to clean a HD then people think. And No, Formatting the HD does not completely remove all data.
Removing the computer won't work because then he has to answer questions on why. Lying about a New Computer being the one he used most likely won't work either if they start matching logs on the School Internet with his dorm room.
His one hope is he used a wireless router and did everything from a second computer that he never used before. Then he can claim he was hacked.

Mike Kernell, a longtime Tennessee state assemblyman from Memphis and a technology enthusiast, is concerned about future elections because the new machines are harder to get a look at. ”We used to be able to check the machines and see if they’d been tampered with,” he said. ”It is now almost impossible.” Mr. Kernell wonders whether he will have to hire a computer programmer in his next race to make sure the machines are working smoothly and haven’t been tampered with. ”We’ve hit a brick wall,” he said.
He’s already posted everything he did.

And he immediately deleted everything after he realized the possibility that he might have been a bad boy.
He also admitted that he was looking for something to torpedo Sarah’s campaign but didn’t find it.
I can’t figure out what I want to happen to him because he is very young and, although he is intelligent and gifted in some ways, he is naive and emotionally troubled (depression, etc. ... chess fanatic ... probably no friends outside of cyber space)
I want this to make Obama look bad, the guy’s father look bad and Sarah look good.
I can’t figure out what else I want.
Computer forensics can do amazing stuff to recover what users think they’ve deleted on their computers.

He'll be charged with something less than the actual felony committed, to which he will cop a plea. If he has no priors, he'll be sentenced to a kiddie joint like Allenwood, PA for white collar criminals, his sentence will be suspended, and he'll do 1000 hours community service and have five years probation.
The FBI and Secret Service have amazing computer forensic tools and personnel. It won’t matter if he deleted data or formatted the drive. If he did it, his only hope is that he ground up the old hard drive into little bitty pieces.
If I committed a high profile felony with a computer and had a week to dispose of that evidence, your computer forensics expert would not find any physical evidence of said computer ever existing.
Now, add to the mix that I am a pampered kid of a dem politician? Nope, I don’t own a computer. I might have at one time (a week ago) but it’s gone. I would have taken it to a friend in the university metal shop, melted it down and it would now be a piece of abstract art in the corner.
Have you seen software that will read a missing hard drive?
I am not saying that he should not experience the consequences, just that I find it sad.
