A new poll of rural voters in battleground states shows John McCain with a 10 point lead over Barack Obama. McCain leads 51-41, has nearly caught up with Obama as a good manager of the economy and has tied his Democratic rival as a change agent. Also, the poll shows McCain's running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, is popular with rural voters. The survey was conducted Sept. 16-18 in 13 swing states, such as New Mexico, Colorado and Missouri. If it contains any bad news for McCain, it's that he may lag George W. Bush's 2004 performance in rural areas. That's not for sure, though. At this time four years ago, Republican pollster Bill Greener and Democratic pollster Anna Greenberg -- who've been taking the survey for the Center for Rural Strategies in Whitesburg, Ky. -- found Bush with a 13-point lead over John Kerry among rural voters. That survey tested fewer likely voters (536) and had a larger margin of error (plus or minus 4.4 percent) than this month's (742 likely voters and plus or minus 3.6 percent, respectively). On Election Day four years ago, Bush won rural voters nationwide by 20 points. Who knows if McCain can meet that mark.

If McCain is only 51-41 with truly rural voters, he’s in trouble.
This is a poll I do not trust.

Read further. It states that in 2004 G.W.B. was ahead by 13 points at this time and went on to win by around 20. Mccain’s only 3 points behind by comparison.
Not that I think McCain is as popular as Bush was in 2004. I think he’s probably somewhere between the 2000 and 2004 campaigns right now.
2000 is a somewhat flawed model however since the DUI story right before the election and the call early for Florida affected the election in small part. That’s why they are called October surprises though...
There’s probably fewer people named bradley in rural areas so they are more willing to say how they feel about a candiate regardless of his color.
How is it good news that McCain’s economic management numbers lag behind 0bama among rural voters at all?
Rural voters should be looking at this Chicago hustler very suspiciously. He should be lagging McCain on this issue by 20 points.
We are going to be ok. Even better if John McCain clears up his mind on this economic mess. He should be calling for a lot of heads but the SEC is certainly not the top of the list. Chris Dodd of the Banking Committee should be on the list.
These numbers are Sarah Palins numbers.

Honestly, the fact that McCain is only leading by 10 in this poll among rural voters is rather pathetic. Do these people not realize the amount of contempt that Osama has for them?
They are white, first of all. Now let's consider the fact that they're rural whites, which means that they're obviously bitter and cling to their guns and religion and antipathy to people who aren't like them. So why are 41% of people still voting for Obama? ;)
