People with personality disorders can be very charming as needed.
Trust me Obama's a different bird. You should be *wishing* he was NPD.

LOL! That would be my preferred diagnosis.

I don't like throwing around diagnoses. I think it would be hard to make an accurate diagnosis without knowing more about his personal relationships.

I am as troubled by this article as I was by the article by some alleged pshrink in Sodom by the Bay who waxed eloquent about Dubya being a dry drunk. Yeah, it's not totally off the wall to think such tings about either of them, but no responsible counsellor would propose a diagnosis on the basis of the news and public appearances.

I mean, the very fact that one engages in public appearances lays the groundwork for a diagnosis of Histrionic PD, but some jobs require public appearances, fer crine oudloud.

So I think this article aand all like it are irresponsible and make psychotherapy sobject to politics. The writer must die.

Oops. Did I say that?

Of course, many politicians have high opinions of themselves and are narcissistic, but I don’t think this senator is really exceptional in this regard.

I think you're vastly underestimating the depth of Obama's narcissism.

To the author of this article,

Lay people who engage in psychiatric diagnosis of people they’ve never met and do not know are...narcissistic.

My husband and I were talking about this at lunch today. I’d say, yes.

I used to tell people that he reminded of Marjoe Goertner, when I heard him at the 2004 convention. I’d say that Marjoe was a narcissistic, and a huge fraud.

That pretty much sums up Obama. If you don’t know who Marjoe is and what he was, look him up.

Huh? NPD types are almost always EXTREMELY charming in person. They seem to make friends instantly, to “feel their pain.” But that’s because they are master manipulators of people’s emotions (something a person with true empathy wouldn’t dream of doing). The reality, though, is that these “friends” mean nothing to the narcicist - they’ll be “thrown under the bus” at an instant’s notice.

And this isn’t underestimating Obama. Quite the opposite, in fact - it is recognizing part of why he is so good at politics and how dangerous he really is.

I’ve said this before and it applies not just to Obambi but to most leftist leaders (Kerry, Gore, Clinton, Chavez, etc).

Don't forget John Edwards.

“Trust me Obama’s a different bird. You should be *wishing* he was NPD.”

Something worse than NPD in a President? Oh wow, I *hope* not. I can only think of a few worse things, and they are truly terrifying to conteplate.

Won’t speculate what you are driving at, but I seriously hope you are wrong.

Uh oh. You might just harbor repressed feelings of anger toward psychotherapists. Me, I harbor unrepressed feelings of anger toward politicians, which is why I drink whiskey and write so affectionately about them. ;-)

I have also seen it in some corporate executives. More the empty suit types, long on image short on substance. And yes, they are the limousine liberal types.

No, I do not lump all corporate executives in this category.

Repressed my ample behind!

My professional opinion with respect to both of us is if our anger were any less repressed we'd be doing time.

Obama has done what I thought at one time was impossible, outdone Bill Clinton when it comes to narcissism and ego-centricity.

I'm quite aware of what you are talking about. But if you meet a real narcissist you'll find that they can be amazingly callous and cruel with people that aren't useful to them. Obama is different. You may argue that he's just smarter. I'll argue he's another breed entirely.

Don’t know about NPD, but someone who would say, “we are the ones we’ve been waiting for”, is odd.

I just assumed at the time that that was the royal "we." As in Queen Victoria's famous phrase, "We are not amused."

Think about it this way. A truly NPD person only cares for the acquisition and maintenance of power. They're relatively simple, petty dictators and despots. Obama has preternatural self control. Every action he takes is calculated not just for personal gain(i.e. somebody with NPD) but with the intention of redefining the game entirely. That should be far more scary.

Think about it this way, he doesn't play messiah(like an NPD person would) he *is* the messiah.
