Madison - Former Republican presidential candidate U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas will keynote Saturday's session of the 50th anniversary of the Appleton-based John Birch Society.
Paul will be one of three speakers at the 8 p.m. Saturday event at the Best Western Bridgewood Resort Hotel in Neenah, according to spokesman Bill Hahn. Also speaking at that event will be Hilliard Welch, son of Society founder Robert Welch, and Society chief executive Arthur Thompson.
A physician and an icon among some conservatives, Paul calls himself "America's No. 1 defender of liberty." He did not win any Republican presidential primaries, however.
The Saturday evening session will conclude three days of events, which begin today, honoring the John Birch Society's anniversary, Hahn said. All public tickets for the event have been sold, he added.
On its Internet site, the Society lists this as its mission: To bring about less government, more responsibility, and - with God's help - a better world by providing leadership, education, and organized volunteer action in accordance with moral and Constitutional principles.

not exactly the libertarian Reason.com had in mind.
All those years ago....the John Birch Society was right.
Free (or government subsidized) shrimp will be served.
Is there any fringe group he won’t associate with?
If RP can support the John Birch Society then why couldn’t he get behind the Iraq war? JBS is one of the most hawkish organizations out there.
Not on Iraq.
In my experience, Birchers are good people. I dabbled, but couldn’t buy into the whole CFR-rules-the-world thing.
Which is not to say there isn’t reason to be concerned about the overall mindset of organizations like the CFR - I don’t like them. They aren’t a nefarious cabal, though: just misguided (for the most part).

This is a JBS affair, so make it coffee and cookies.
We’ve got much bigger fish to fry. Watch the video.

I believe Paul knows what is about to occur to the dollar and the fallout. What is there to lose anymore when it appears the US is heading for an iceberg?
JBS wants US out of the UN. Sounds like that should be part of the GOP platform.
Besides, the GOP and Dems are Fabians today. JBS was right about them.
You just jarred my memory. Quinn on his show this morning stated something similar, that all the “kook conspiritists” from back then don’t sound so kookie anymore, do they? And he proceeded to explain what their “kook” theories were back then. Strikingly familiar to today’s events.
I just grabbed my copy of a book of JBS called “Global Tyranny...Step by Step”, copyright 1992. The beginning of Chapter Ten takes your breath away. I found the PDF to it here. Chapter Ten beginning on page 115 of the PDF: http://www.crowhealingnetwork.net/pdf/Global%20Tyranny%20Step%20By%20Step%20-%20By%20William%20F%20Jasper.pdf
Agree wholeheartedly about the UN. It’s the CFR obsession that turns me off a bit.

JBS is consistently conservative, traditionalist, Christian and constitutionalist.
Definitely “fringe” for the liberal/globalist McCain Republican party, but not for us conservative, pro-life, pro-gun, pro-Constitution, pro-family pro-original-intent independents.
