JUAREZ, Mexico (AP) -- A 990-pound (450-kilogram), bedridden man who had appealed on Mexican television for help tackling his weight problem died Tuesday of heart failure, his family said.
Jose Luis Garza, 47, tipped the scales at almost 1,000 pounds before his death.
Emergency officials had to knock down Jose Luis Garza's bedroom wall and load him onto the back of a friend's pickup as he fought for his life. The 47-year-old was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital in northern Mexico.

Somebody shoulda warned this guy.

someone should have warned him that eating in bed is unhealthy.
His Fiance brought him the food.
What gets me is his family blaming the state for not getting him to a hospital. The guy was bed-ridden. Someone was bringing him food for years and years to enable him to get that huge. I suspect it was the same people blaming others now.
The narrator on the show and the doctors basically said that his mother needed to care for someone and he was it. Without him to take care of every day, she'd be lost.
I wonder if the mother has some sort of Munchausen (sp?) by proxy syndrome, or a cousin of it.
It has to be a mental condition in the enabler. No other way around it.
Lazy.
There is NO excuse for ANYBODY being that lazy.
No, the other Mexican’s (The one who lost weight) Fiance brought him the food.

Fought for his life? Sounds like the only thing he fought for over the years was more food!
Mmmmm, Chimmi Changa’s, Ho-ho’s, Crispy Creams, and a diet coke.
Micheal Moore, this is your future. (Except the having a friend part)
He should have run for the border................
What I never get about these stories is that, once the person can no longer move, it is clear that someone else is feeding him/her. So isn’t the first thing to deal with that person?
Actually, while America has the highest rate of obesity in the world Mexico is number 2.
Yankee bigots seem to gather on FR.
More likely in Nuevo York!!!
If he had done that, it would have measured 6.2 on the Richter Scale.
The people bringing him the food killed him so they are trying to move the fault to someone else. It’s like alcoholics whose families enable them to keep drinking. I’m close to one of those situations. The family can’t be bothered to provide shelter away from the guy’s drinking buddies but they were sure ready to sue when he wound up in ICU...again.
LOL!!!....At least he would have set off the vibration sensors!................
Woman didn't know she was pregnant, gives birth -- now hospital is sued
Money quote at end of story:
""Chutzpah," Obolsky said. "This is America. You've got to love this country. This woman doesn't know she is pregnant, but somebody else should."

“Feeders,” as they are called, are into controlling their eaters. What better way to keep a person completely dependant and under control.
It’s not JUST that someone was feeding him, it’s the sheer amount.
It takes a lot of calories just to support 400+ pounds. We’re talking about DOUBLING that, and THEN adding another 200 pound person?
That would require turning eating into essentially a full time job. There is just no way to support that kind of weight, AND add to it, without spending a large portion of the day gorging yourself on inhumanly huge quantities of food...and then getting up the next day and doing it again, and repeating the process every single day for years.
I don't even want to think about . . . I mean, I know what happens to me if I eat too much salad. I can't imagine what happens to someone who consumes ungodly amounts of fat and calories per day.
Yuck. Who could do that?
Interestingly, we're number two in highest amount of Mexicans.

Feeding him is the easy part ... what about cleaning him?
Actually, there is. It starts when you get out of shape, and a little over weight. Things just become harder to do, you tire more easily. Then as you gain more wieght, you tire even more, and expend more energy doing it, which of course makes you want to eat more.
As you gain even more wieght, your feet and knee's begin to get painfull, Back problems set in because of your weakening condition.
It gets harder to breathe as the fat around your liver pushes into the duaphram, reducing lung capacity as well as increasing pressure around the heart sack.
Soon you are hardly able to walk up a flight of stairs, or walk a block to the bus stop to go to work.
Next thing you know, you have your first heart attack and end up at home in bed on disability, gaining anbother 100 lbs a year.
It doesn't even take much food. Despite trying to cut down caloric intake, people in that condition continue to gain wieght, even if they are only eating 1200 calories a day, watching their carb intake.
What happens is they trigger tjeir liver into producing sugars to compensate for the lack of carbs they get through diet. This cause the liver to produce blood sugars from the bodys protein stores, not fat unfortunately. The liver when it's working this way, always produces way more than the body needs, which in turn causes the pancreas to work even harder producing insulin to bring those levels down. Too much insulin, causes you to put on even more fat.
It's a difficult situation to get out of. It may sound hard to believe, but dieting just doesn't work for those people (any people for that matter, but 10 times worse for them) What these people are, are basically type 2 diabetics, but don't know it, just like most overweight Americans don't know it. They think that as long as they don't take insulin, they can't be diabetic. WRONG!
The biggest mistake overwieght people make when trying to loose wieght, is cut all the carbs out of their diet. This is a huge mistake. This triggers low blood sugar conditions, which triggers the liver into producing blood sugars from body proteins. This is NOT what you want to have happen. It's what starts the "big belly" look, where the person carries a lot of their fat around the abdomin, and bellies start pouring over belts.
type 2 diabetes requires that you keep your blood sugur levels between 4.0 -7.0 before meals, between 5.0 10.0 2 hours after. This is done by restricting carb intake to about 60-75g per meals, and eating 3 meals a day. Skipping meals is a no no. At the same time, reducing fat intake. Proteins, carbs, and fats are the three main food groups. Protiens and carbs are what you want to eat, managing the carbs to about 65g a meal for the average male, 55-60 for a female.
Watching some of the shows on TV, the doctors found that many said they were taking in few calories but were actually taking in 7000 or more calories per day.
It must have been the “wafer thin” mint that got him.
They are pretty chunky down in Mexico too. I guess that's all there is to do down there, eat tacos and re fried beans all day.
Here in Texas a black family was B-B-Qing and set the grill too close to the house. Well they left the grill unattended and the house caught fire. They are blaming the fire dept. saying that the house burned down because the fire dept was too slow in getting there.
They set the house on fire and blame the fire dept for it.
LOL, true enough. Although I think obesity in the US is an equal opportunity affliction.
You are dead wrong. It doesn’t take a lot of calories to get that big. All it takes is a bad diet. You can cut calories down to 1000 a day and still gain a lot of weight. I explained why above.
You can cut all the fat and carbs out of your diet, and still put on fat because your liver turns into a giant sugar factory, the excess insulin your pancreas starts producing turns into fat.
Insulin doesn’t turn into fat itself, it turns the excess sugar your liver is making into fat.
even if you cut out all protein intake, the liver will start turning your body muscles into sugar. So eating only rabbit food doesn’t help you loose weight either.
You MUST eat a balanced diet. Count carbs not calories. The trick is to keep your blood sugars within a targetr range to prevent your liver from producing sugar when blood levels fall below 4.0, around 3.5 is when the liver begins producing sugar from proteins.
You MUST eat at least 3 meals a day. Skipping meals makes your blood sugars fluctuate too much, causing the liver to produce sugars when they fall too low.
Fiancee? .....Amazing!!
I learned all this the hard way too.
I was starving myself, but kept gaining weight. I got up to 260, and was getting sicker. Finally a blood test told me I had become diabetic. I spent 3 weeks in a class listening to a dietician, and now I’m eating 3 meals a day instead of one small one, have my blood sugars under control and lost 40 lbs so far.
Prayers for Jose and family.
Look, if someone gets that fat, simply don’t feed them.
Since they can’t move, provide them with WATER ONLY. They WILL lose enough blubber to allow them to walk again long before they starve.
No, they will die.
And they won’t have any muscle left to walk before they die.
They won’t loose much fat at all.
Have you got some kind of reference for this, somewhere on the web?
I’ve taken care of patients that were 600+ pounds, and in the hospital they lost weight on 1800 cal diets. Of course, physical therapy took place twice a day, consisting of activities such as getting up into a chair, rolling over in bed, passive/active movement of legs. Most of the patients hated p.t. with a passion.
To make a statement like, “You are dead wrong” just seems to me to be rather extreme, and I’d like to have some sound theory/research to back that up.
The only way to loose fat is to turn it into muscle and/or feed muscle. Exercise. Every bit counts.
About 4 years ago, I lost about 80 lbs. I now have a BMI of 23...but...keeping the weight off is literally hell on earth. I **must** weight and measure every crumb. Literally! Even one small Oreo cookie over my allotted 1,200 calories a day is enough to put on weight the very next day. This regimen also includes vigorous mountain biking and skiing 5 times a week.
Every day I wake up and the first thing I thing about is how hungry I am, how hungry I will be, and how much work and **determination** it will take just to get through the next 24 hours. I dread family and social events because of the food involved.
Some weeks ago I went to our local medical school library and did some research on hunger and weight loss. The only thing that works is surgery. Those having surgery have the best chance of losing weight and keeping it off.
By the way, there is a new operation called a vagotomy, that snips the vagus nerve as it exits the stomach. It is a 20 minute laporoscopy operation and the patients leave the hospital an hour after the operation and go back to work the next day. Unfortunately, I was not able to find any papers published by the surgeons doing this operation and only read about in the popular press. The surgeons are located in San Francisco and Pittsburgh.
Anyway...Here it is morning,..and I have another day of facing constant hunger and only 1,200 calories to feed it. I **know** from experience that any more than that and I will gain weight. There are more than 15 hunger hormones that drive weight gain, metabolism, and hunger and it is **very** hard to trick Mother Nature.
If there is food in heaven, I will turn around and go to hell. Hell could not be worse.
LOL!!!
I have visions of a conveyor belt bring food non-stop to Michael Moore. "Moore, Moore, Moore, I need Moore!" He would shout.
I am betting you are not fat.
By the way, how many of these patients maintained their weight loss 10 later?
Please read post #43.
Count carbs not calories. If you are restricting your 600lb patients to 1800 calories like you say, how do you know if they are getting enough carbs if the diet isn't carefully calculated to ensure they do?
If they aren't getting enough carbs, they won't loose weight even if you cut "calories" to 1000. Calories can be anything. pure fat if you like.
If they don't get enough carbs, their livers will just make sugar from protein.

Wow, you have my sympathy.
It doesn’t completely support what Nathan said, but formerly fat people have a much harder time staying at a normal weight than normal weight people. Not only do their metabolisms plummet, but they are literally driven insane by their bodies. http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/05/08/healthscience/snfat.php?page=1
Unfortunately, the only way nonsurgical, reliable way to get thin is to not to get fat.
Sorry if that was depressing, but at least you know you’re not a freak...
When the liver makes sugar, it always makes more than the body needs. The extra insulin this triggers the pancreas to make, stores this extra sugar as fat.
Then, next time their sugar gets too low (from a diet too low in carbs lets say) this again triggers the liver to make sugar from protein, which is always too much, and again the pancreas makes more insulin to compensate, storing the excess sugar as fat.
The fat keeps building up, even on a 1000 calorie diet.
Normally you'd eat say, a ham sandwich 30g carbs, a bowl of vegetable soup-15 carbs, a salad- 0 carbs (except for what's in the dressing), a piece of fruit- 15 g carbs.
That's 60 g total carbs, a little lean but enough if you sit at a desk.
