Would Romney Be Doing Better?
The New Republic via The Spartan Truth ^ | Michael Crowley

Posted on 10/10/2008 10:57:34 PM PDT by Gator_that_eats_Dems

The economy is collapsing and the GOP is stuck with a candidate who doesn't know jack about economics. But what if Mitt Romney had won that hard-fought Florida primary and grabbed the nomination? Romney's whole business career was about turning around distressed companies. Plus, he's far less identified with George W. Bush than is McCain. And unlike McCain he might not have had to give up on Michigan, where his father was governor. (What state pray tell is McCain holding that Mitt couldn't?)

I know there are plenty of strikes against the guy. But it's an interesting counterfactual to consider--one that makes a lot more sense now that foreign policy has all but disappeared from the conversation.

P.S. Good point from commenter timteeter:

Or for that matter if McCain had sucked it up and made Romney his VP.

You might've had far less base enthusiasm at convention time, but delivering a strong economic message right now could've been far easier.

Well at this point, a pair of Governors against a pair of Senators would be worth about 10% points regardless of who they were or what their philosphy. Having a Senator at the top of the ticket hampers going after Dodd and Franks and even Senator Obama.

McCain has to fight off the “you were in the Senate” charge.

Romney looks like he would be Biden’s boss down at the used car dealership.

I disagree, the images, and the videos, the planned parenthood fund raisers and donations, his wife's pro abort position, Romney's throwing his mother under the bus as a campaigning pro-abort in her Senate race before Roe vs Wade, his trying to rewrite Reagan as “adamantly pro-choice”

This is what beat him in the primary, it would have been devastating in the election at this point.

I don’t know where in the South you live, Cook County GA instead of Cook County Ill. perhaps? Where I live there are many Christians who don’t like the governor who ushered gay marriage into this country, said he would do more for gays than Ted Kennedy, regularly says Ronald Reagan was pro abortion (never was the case), and was himself a long time a staunch supporter of a woman’s so-called “right” to choose to kill their child.

Some people don’t know what went on in Taxachusetts, but many Christians down here tried very hard to prevent what Romney did in his state. They just could not believe the one doing it had an R next to his name and they have not forgotten.

I believe the saying goes “if if and buts were candy and nuts we would all have a Merry Christmas.” Best not to think about what could have been and if it would be better or worse. Just think about how you can make the best of the situation at hand.

What does it matter? Romney’s not the nominee.

Gee, he only killed the state party he was in charge of. We’re such a bunch of ingrates for not worshipping his galactically gargantuan ego and perfect hair. Cry me a river.

He’s had all his unhinged disciples and paid agents out badmouthing Gov. Palin after Johnny refused to pick him. Slick Willard has always done the dirty work for the Democrats. Hell hath no fury like a RINO scorned.

Romney is helping Republicans, including McCain in Nevada (see October 2 below).”

So typical of Romney’s followers, all of those links were about Romney. I clicked on several of them to learn about the candidates and everyone came up as ‘Romney is here’ now ‘Romney is there’, look! Romney is a part of your party!, Romney! He is the new conservative! (since 2006)

Where is Mitt Romney NOW?
He got the message that he wasn’t welcome in the GOP.

And that is why the GOP at present seems to be losing.

There are a lot of fine people in the GOP, but there is a contingent that keeps shouting, “Come one and all. We need your vote. But after that keep your mouth shut and get lost. The “purists” are in charge, and don’t forget it.”

Meanwhile, the Democrats are shouting, “Come one and all. If you seem to be an outcast of society because of your ideas or your gender or your color or your orientation or your economic status, we will accept you and represent you. We won’t criticize you for your strange ideas and features. Come and be welcome. We can all work together and take control of the country.”

AND THAT IS THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER.
AND WHO IS GOING TO WIN?

SOME PEOPLE ARE STUPID STUPID STUPID WITHOUT HALF TRYING.

During his 61 years of life when was Mitt Romney helping conservatism, how many of those years did he even belong to the Republican party?

He pulled off a single Governors term and spent a 150,000,000 dollars to buy a seat at the celebrity table of defeated candidates.

The man may appeal to you but he should not generate the passion that we see from his “followers”.

McCain refused to mention Romney as a potential Treasury Secretary in the last debate. He mentioned Meg Whitfield and Warren Buffet, an Obama supporter.

McCain is rather clueless on the economy, to be honest. He keeps talking about earmarks, but never once have I heard him talk about CRA, Obama, and Acorn in one sentence.

For gosh sakes man, there are other politicians that are better conservatives. Just think of popular Governors like Palin and Jindal.

Quit looking for something that isn’t there.
