Fresno, Oct 14, 2008 / 08:20 pm (CNA).- Bishop of Fresno John Steinbock has removed and suspended from the priesthood a pastor who told parishioners to oppose Proposition 8 and declared himself to be a homosexual. The bishop’s letter to the priest charged him with contradicting the teaching of the Catholic Church and bringing scandal to the parish and to the whole Church.

Proposition 8 is a ballot measure for California which, if passed, will amend the state Constitution to define marriage as being between a man and a woman. The California Supreme Court had imposed same-sex marriage on the state in a May decision.

On October 5 Father Geoffrey Farrow, who until recently pastored the St. Paul Newman Center in Fresno, told parishioners he opposed the marriage initiative after his homily at the 11 a.m. Mass, the California Catholic Daily reports. In a television interview before the Mass on KFSN-TV in Fresno, the priest admitted his own homosexuality.

When news of Fr. Farrow´s stance reached Bishop Steinbock, he took away the priest’s diocesan salary and health benefits, telling him not to return to the Newman Center or any other parish in the diocese he had previously served.

How judgmental.

How non-inclusive.

How excellent.

For those who don't know, Newman Centers normally minister to college students.

And I would add:

How authoritative.

How orthodox.

How awesome.

Now what about those priests who openly support the Democratic Party and their alternate stance on abortion?
If they enforced violations of church policy in Chicago they wouldn't have many priests left... since so many of them are Left~

Wow...an organization that stands by its principles with action and not just words. Sadly rare.

I just worry that Bahney Fwank will try to add this defrocked deviate to some sort of bailout bill...

Bad move. Should have transferred him to a Church in a former Eastern Bloc Country. Then, after a year or so, fire his butt.

Now, he will be a local hero, and we’ll see pictures of him, on his knees, in the next SF Gay Day parade.

For all the rightly deserved indignation heaped upon a few priests, the ENEMEDIA thoughtfully left out the FACT they were ALL HOMOs!

I’m a conservative Protestant, but I’m glad to see the Catholic church showing leadership on this an other key social issues.

“If they enforced violations of church policy in Chicago they wouldn’t have many priests left.”

#####

So be it.

The Catholic Church is historically and in our time, the bellwether of the entire concept of “pro-life”. Aside from the salvation of the soul, I don’t believe anything else is of such paramount importance.

Good for the Bishop.

Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI are working to replace bad bishops with good ones over the decades...

How dogmatic.

The ahistorical illiterates on the Left go absolutely apoplectic over their gross misunderstanding of that particular adjective.

Right up there with “McCarthyism”.

Maybe not even a Cardinal, if Pfleger's kid-glove treatment by Cardinal George was typical.

Smaller yet more faithful, orthodox Church. No problem. All throughout the world Catholics are deprived of clergy. Sometimes when one is deprived of something one takes for granted, one gains a new appreciation for it.

I am all for weeding out the priests and bishops who have done so much damage to our Church and her believers. A stronger, traditional church suits me fine.

“Pope John Paul II (was) working to replace bad bishops with good ones over the decades... “

Really? Because I didn’t see it.

Pope Benedict XVI, on the other hand, is taking action.
