Late-Night Comics Attack Republicans By 7 to 1 Ratio
publiusforum.com ^ | 10/21/08 | Warner Todd Huston

Not that any of us here could possibly be surprised -- I say that to head off the inevitable comments asking how we could be -- but a new study from the Center for Media and Public Affairs finds that late-night comedians attack Republicans far more than they do Democrats. In fact, the CMPA found a lopsided 7 to 1 ratio of Republican compared to Democrat jokes. "The total: Republicans, 286. Democrats, 42."

Fox News reported that the CMPA's Donald Rieck found that this current election was "driving it off the charts" with the preponderance of jokes directed at Republicans on late-night TV.

"Generally the Republicans get targeted much more often than Democrats, but this election is driving it off the charts," said CMPA Executive Director Donald Rieck.

The CMPA has a running total going on its website for those interested in the complete breakdown. There you'll find the count from the late-night shows “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “The Late Show with David Letterman,” “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report.”..

Isn’t that probably because they’re mostly liberals?

The audiences consist mainly of (Obama)zombies who lost their ability to think after about five years in the government training centers commonly referred to as pub(l)ic education.

Who cares. Not very many people watch these shows. Leno is the highest-rated, and what does he get? Six million?

I would rather watch re-runs of “Gentle Ben” 24 hours a day than to spend one minute watching late night talk shows. If conservatives would stop watching maybe ratings would suffer and the late night “entertainers” would shut up on conservative bashing for a while. I really have never seen any comedic genius in Letterman. IMHO he is over rated. But, that’s just me.

If only we have something to laugh at on November 5th.

If McCain and his coterie of suicidal block-headed ninnyhammers pull this off these clowns and their colleagues in the MSM will have to be put on suicide watch.

Please, dear Lord, make it happen.

7 to 1 ratio

Think that might be a typo, in actuality it is "7 for The 1"...with Conan probably the worse. For him it's always McCain's "older than dirt" and Palin's "she's not one of us elite northeast liberal know it alls, so she's stupid".

Sheesh, with all the material on Biden one would think they'd have a field day with the clown......not a word...MSM...Must Satisfy(the)Messiah.

The thing that none of these fools will accept is that Democrats are much easier to make jokes about than Republicans. Bill Clinton was a goldmine. Biden is a gaffe machine who thinks FDR was on TV before it was invented. Obama says something stupid everytime he’s not on a teleprompter which is why he takes one even to rallies.

Meanwhile, all Bush jokes dwell incessantly on minor grammatical errors. The same joke is used constantly and with great vindictiveness. Tapping your foot in a restroom makes you a household name from obscurity, but taking a $90,000 bribe and putting it in your freezer is somehow not worth making fun of. Republican politicians are generally boring, white guys whose names are not widely known, and yet these writers will scrape together lame, mean, obscure jokes about them than simply write jokes about Democrats which is as easy as breathing.

If one of these guys would just play things by ear, and joke about what’s actually funny, you’d see a majority of Democrat jokes, but you’d also see double their ratings. And both sides would find it funny because it is.

I don't mind the jokes against conservatives if they're somewhat fresh and insightful.

But they just replay the same template every freaking night! Here's tonight's monologue from Leno/Letterman/Conan:

Joke 1: Bush commented on something, but he totally misunderstood the issue and said something stupid about it.
Joke 2: Something happened a really, really long time ago... and John McCain was there when it happened. Get it?! He's old!?!
Joke 3: Bush is dumb again.

Rinse. Lather. Repeat.

I noticed this on Letterman about a month ago. All McCain all the time. Not a single Obama joke. He could have spent half the night on Biden jokes alone, but nary a peep.

I really have never seen any comedic genius in Letterman.

I think he was funny in about '82 or '83.

It's not just the ratio of jokes are skewed toward Republicans....It's much worse. The jokes aimed toward Republicans almost always have punch lines that mirror Democrats talking points. The few jokes aimed at Democrats rarely do.

For example Leno almost every night has jokes with punch lines that imply Bush is stupid, McCain is old, or Palin is a hick. Typical punch lines for Biden are about his hair plugs instead of his numerous gaffes. Obama has just about been off limits but punch lines for him are never about his inexperience, lack of accomplishments, or questionable associations.

A typical punch line that is frequently used by Leno for a Democrat has a theme that Bill Clinton is a womanizer and that's about as bad as it gets. I've also noticed a trend that last few months where Leno uses "Republicans abusing the constitution" as a punch line theme.

Isn’t that weird how if you like a guy, it’s not as funny as if you don’t like him!

I think he was funny in about ‘82 or ‘83.

26 years makes that fact irrelevant. Remember, Obama was a coke head about that many years ago and according to the attitude of the press - that's irrelevant. So, Letterman's funny phase is mute :).
