RedState: Romney Surrogates Sabotaging Sarah Palin?
RedState ^ | October 28, 2008 | Erick Erickson

Posted on 10/28/2008 3:31:52 PM PDT by St. Louis Conservative

When I was in St. Paul for the Republican Convention, more than a dozen people told me acolytes of Mitt Romney were feeding all the stories to the media portraying Palin in a negative light.

In fact, I heard that one of the biggest pushers of anti-Palin stories, including encouraging reporters to pursue the "Trooper-gate" story was Romney spokesman Kevin Madden.

I did not blog on it at the time because I perceived it to be people trying to finish off Romney. It likewise seemed clear to me that if this was going on, it was people loyal to Romney who were still hoping for his come back and not Romney himself.

These days it is hard to miss Kathleen Parker's savage attacks on Sarah Palin. She, along with several others listed here attacking Sarah Palin were also some of the first pundits in bed with the Romney campaign in 2007/8.

Again, it is hard for me to place the finger on Romney. It seems to me that these are people who are still convinced he's the better nominee and don't want Palin to be in any position to challenge him in 2012.

Sad to say, but after Thompson bowed out, I liked Romney. But I do know his supporters do get a bit rough. And I’m not down on him about it but sometimes I think they press the envelope too hard.

If this is true, this would be one of them.

I didn’t like Romney this year, as I also won’t like him in 2012. At least 4 years from now, he would have been a “conservative” for a longer time than he was this year.

Has Romney ever publically stated his support for Sarah Palin? What, if anything, has Romney said about McCain’s VP pick?

Has Romney ever publically stated his support for Sarah Palin?

Yes I believe he did. He was quoted as saying that McCain made the right choice and that she was a "net plus."

Faint praise in the quote. Maybe there's more or someone can find a link.

In the Primaries, Romney supporters trashed John McCain and our mortgage crisis hero Mike Huckabee (remember the "Club for Growth" front operation's distortions?).

It's too late to fire them. McCain-Palin should just put them to work handling campaign mailers.

Romney would Never win in 2012 vs. Obama. Palin, Jindal, Paul Ryan, McCotter would have a better shot at knocking him off.

“I say it’s the libs trying to create discord in the GOP camp”

Exactly. Mitt Romney has been out on the campaign trail supporting and campaigning for the ticket. I have heard him on radio shows supporting McCain/Palin.

I can't believe some of the posts in this thread so far.

Harming the most popular conservative since Reagan is such good way to reach the hearts of Conservatives. Good thinking, Mittens.

You and your cronies have been outed and now you'll have to deal with the consequences.

Has Romney ever publically stated his support for Sarah Palin?

Mitt was on Fox and Friends this morning and was asked if it was a mistake for McCain to choose Palin instead of him for VP. He said “no, it was a net plus” and went on to talk favorably about her. If what his aid said is true, he didn’t give any indication of that this morning on F and F. That may be his true feelings, but he is being a good soldier as far as I can tell. By they way, I was never a Mitt supporter.

SSDD for Myth Romney, the back-stabing shape-shifter of the GOP.

ROMNEY ANTI-PALIN

"Former Mitt Romney presidential campaign staffers, some of whom are currently working
for Sen. John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin's bid for the White House, have been involved
in spreading ant-Palin spin to reporters, seeking to diminish her standing after the election.
"Sarah Palin is a lightweight, she won't be the first, not even the third, person people
will think of when it comes to 2012," says one former Romney aide,
now working for McCain-Palin. "The only serious candidate ready to challenge to
lead the Republican Party is Mitt Romney. He's in charge on November 5th."

Romney's behind the scenes attack on Gov. Palin.

"Almost every critical remark made about Palin
on a recent briefing call about her selection came from political consultants
with ties to Romney. Those comments were planted, says one,
because they knew that reporters would be on the call."

[Washington Prowler, American Spectator, Storm Center, 9/2/2008]

Romney's attacks on other GOP candidates.

Novak: Fred Thompson drop-out rumors traced to Romney campaign

Said Novak: The rumors were "traced in part to Mitt Romney's campaign,
trying to stir up strife between McCain and Thompson
."

Romney's attacks on other GOP candidates.

"....John McCain rightly did not like Romney's tactics during the primaries.
(W)hen (Romney's early leads) started slipping away, he resorted to unfair,
distorted, scorched-earth negative ads, betting that his opponents couldn't
afford to spend enough for the truth to catch up to his charges."
[Romney: A Mistake for McCain, 7/23/2008, Dick Morris]

Romney's refusal to help GOP candidates in Massachusetts.

"The most glaring oversight was Romney's refusal to do a phone recording
for Massachusetts Republican Jeff Beatty, who is challenging Sen. John Kerry.
"Mitt supposedly cares about Massachusetts, but won't even return phone calls asking for help,"
says a conservative working for Beatty in Boston.
"It's a tough race, but the least he could do is help.
He's showing his true colors."

I don’t think Romney would do this. His former aides? Sure.

I’d take Gov Palin over Myth Romney at this point.

Four more years of pretending to be a conservative wouldn’t be much impetus in support of Romney. He still doesn’t impress this conservative.
