The only difference between Obama's plan and the draft is that the constitution allows for the Federal gov't to raise and support an army...therefore consription is assumed and allowed in the constitution...whereas this is not.

But I agree with you on the draft. I've been in almost 22 years...and being in charge of a unit...I can tell you there is a BIG difference b/w people who WANT to be there and people who don't. The voluntary service we have now is just fine. If we added a bunch of people who don't want to be here (especially those who can be founf in today's society)...it would be a real drag.

To those who were talking about school credits required for graduation being connected to community service...I really don't have an issue with that. 1) That is the STATE doing it. 2) It's not MANDATED that you have a high school diploma...you could do the extra work and home school or get a GED. If a STATE decides they want you to do something in return for THEIR diploma...then that's the price. Since one's not MANDATORY (the diploma)...then technically....neither is the other (the service)...its a choice you make. And if I REALLY don't want to make that choice...I could move to another state or disenroll...or get a high school education via some other means.

The problem with this is it is FEDERALLY MANDATED SERVICE FOR ALL...with NOTHING promised in return. And as another poster said...you can bet your bottom dollar that the kids who will be complying will be the suburban and rural kids...not the inner city kids.

Who says only public school children will be required to perform this “forced labour”?

"Barack Obama will require you to work. He is going to demand that you shed your cynicism. That you put down your divisions. That you come out of your isolation, that you move out of your comfort zones. That you push yourselves to be better. And that you engage. Barack will never allow you to go back to your lives as usual, uninvolved, uninformed."

~Michelle Obama

Thank you for your service. I grew up in a military family and I've worked directly with the military for the past five years. All of the officers I have worked with agree that a draft tends to be counterproductive.

I realize that the constitution allows for it, but it should only be used in a serious crisis situation.

This mandatory community service crap for all citizens is Marxist garbage and we need to start resisting Obama's totalitarian crap now so that he realizes it's not going to fly with the American citizens.

And he hasn't even been inaugurated yet... (sigh...)

I knew we had some stupid people in our country, but who knew we had at least 63 million of 'em? Let them do the community service.

volunteering for high school credit has nothing to do with slavery, the draft, or coercion...

It does when you have to 'volunteer' to work where the school tells you to.

This is his “wish list.”

We have to wait until actual proposed legislation is introduced. There’s plenty of time to react then, when we see what he’s actualy suggesting.

I’ve been reading Ayn Rand’s “We The Living”. Frightening. It sounds just like what the O-team has in store for the US:Want a job, must be a Union member or Party member; All students must participate in “social” activities; Want to get a place to stay, you must show you social profile the house manager, who will then determine from that how much to charge you.

“Sending a child to government school really ought to be considered child abuse. Or are they going to mandate that homeschoolers and private schools also comply? (Or else!)”

OPPS-—did I get off at the wrong bus stop. Please tell me I am not in Cuba.

You’re right, you are totally right... Kids are not lazy and parents are not lazy. Kids are not self-centered, parents are not self-centered. Kids are not overweight, parents are not overweight. Kids play real instruments instead of fake ones. Kids engage in social activity over online simulation. It is sad read that you think 1 hour of community service week, as part of high school graduation credit is socialism. Clearly you were NEVER a boyscout.

Hey newb, how about you stop lecturing me and try and get your perceptions under control. Now listen closely you fake conservative---"community service" is NOT TO BE made COMPULSORY by THE STATE. I'm guessing you're one of the enlightened ones who voted for Obama (the community service organizer) to "teach the republicans a lesson." Makes me sick.

Now go back to your little local newspaper message board stop bothering actual conservatives.

Oh, I’ll send my kids to their mandatory volunteer service but I’ll instruct them to sabotage every aspect of the program (without getting caught) as I have done in the past when confronted with similar things. The insurgency training will start immediately.
