Recommended Gun List for Freepers (Vanity)
11/09/2008 | SoftwareEngineer

I would like to request that fellow Freepers help us non knowledgeable gun owners in recommending guns that we can buy before gun laws get changed. Many of us have only a basic semi automatic hand gun and have never given much thought to anything else.

However, before gun laws change I would like to complete my gun collection and even buy guns that I can leave to my children.

Maybe we can organize the recommendations as follows:

Minimum 1000 rd of ammo for each, or they are only clubs and bricks.

If ammo is stored in cool dry place, preferrably in an army .50 cal. ammo can, it will last a life time with no trouble. I was recently shooting some 7.65 Mauser ammo made in the early 1930’s in Belgium and it is still sure fire.

I guess GMTA. While I don’t know how bad the economy may get under Obomber, I was going to recommend a quality pump or spring piston .177 rifle or pistol. They’re certainly cheap to operate, relatively silent, and extremely useful in supplementing the diet with squirrel, rabbit, groundhogs and fowl. If the utilities and sanitation services shut down they can also be quite handy for pest/rodent control.

Question: What is the typical shelf life for ammunition?

Old ammo that has been kept clean and dry should be good longer than you'll live. More recently, there have been changes in primer formulations to reduce lead. The old lead styphnate primers have a very long life if kept clean and free of oil. Newer formulation (DDNP) is susceptible to degradation by moisture. Shelf life of commercial "lead free" ammunition is about 5 years according to Fiocchi (an ammo manufacturer).

There has also been a move to go "lead free" with the ammunition. A tin/tungsten formulation has been touted. The problem is the tungsten make the bullet very abrasive and results in rapidly worn out barrels. Most barrels will last 20,000 rounds with good lead or copper/lead bullets.

Everybody is in panic mode now....sheesh.

I have a friend who is an avid hunter. He tells me that it's getting more and more expensive to buy ammo. Plus he ordered a gun somewhere and it's still on backorder. People are stocking up.

And he read somewhere that BO would love to increase tax on ammo so high that buying ammo will be unaffordable. We will have to watch the sneak attacks from legislature.

They’ll be too busy raising money to help “pro-gun” demorats to stop it.

That is a very good question.

For centerfire ammo - Prior to Al GOre and “Green” primers, I would say, 100 years (proper storage and all that) - I have fired ammo made in 1947, Russian even, and it all went bang... split and seperatd case not withstanding.

Now, with the “Green” primers I would worry after as little as 10 years.

All the ammo I have purchased of late is furrin made/surplus with the old time type primers. In sealed can, in pritine shape - after ammo from open ammo cans were examined from the same lot.

.22 ammo will normally work if it is clean and stored properly.

How good is the foreign ammo that aimsurplus sells, they seem to have the best prices?

I'm hurting for .45 & .38.

I don’t know where you are, but it must be someplace like CA, DC or NY where they don’t believe in self defense. You might need to take a vacation somewhere to pick one up.

Walmart has similar prices......For example:

Winchester 40 s&W 100 Trget Practice 28.00
50 at a gun show was 16.00

Winchester 40 S&W 50 Hollow Point 22.00 Gun show
20.00 Walmart

Remington Dicks 40 S&W Target Practice 20.00 (.25% off 15.00)

I noticed the 9mm ammo is half that price.

For the guy that posted.....since noone put a price on it.

I just saw .40,.45, and 9mm Taurus 24/7 Compact Semi Automatic (Great Handgun) 2 cartridges 370.00 at the gunshow. 450 at Gander Mountain.

Sorry...I have found .45 and .40 are the same price on ammo, maybe a little higher on .45.

I believe the 38 would be close to the 9mm. Don’t quote me on that though.
