Fire Forces Evacuations, Burns Homes in Sylmar Area

Sayre Fire is near the 210 Freeway in Northern Los Angeles.

A dangerous, fast-moving brush fire in the Sylmar section of the San Fernando Valley, spread by gusting 50 mph winds has now burned at least five homes and is threatening several more, City Fire Department spokesperson Melissa Kelly said today.

So far there are no reports of injuries to residents or fire personnel, said Kelly.

The blaze ignited about 10:30 p.m. in the dry, brushy hills above 13000 W. Sayre Street near Shablow Ave, and has so far consumed more than 500 acres.

"A wildfire burning in the foothills north of Sylmar was reported at 10:30 p.m. Friday night."

Didn't the Santa Barbara fire start around 11:00 p.m.? These are beginning to sound to me like they are deliberately being set.

Just went to get some lunch and viewed the smoke clouds from north east of the fire. There is some nasty burning going on. Worse then I have seen in quite a while. Also looks like some large industrial complexes in Anaheim Hills are being affected judging by the video from helicopters.

I pinpointed the location of the origin of the fire on satellite.

Anyone know the building right in that area..it’s a big building with a parking lot. Right on the Santa Clara Truck trail...

Found a fairly typical final EIS comments & responses appendix for fuels management in southern California.

It makes for entertaining reading:

http://www.researchlearningcenter.org/samo/planning/FireEIS/FEIS%20AppenF%20pp1-50.pdf

Think about this for a sec: this isn’t some huge issue. This is just something as simple as removing brush and fuel build up. Look at how many agencies are able to wave their particular regulatory authority in front of this effort.

You are so off base with your bloviating, it isn’t funny.

You consider a HOME to be part of the “fuel level” you speak of? Hundreds of HOMES have burned in these fires.

There are very high voltage power lines that bring in power from the power plants on the Columbia River in Oregon down into SoCal. Sylmar is the southern terminus of the “Pacific DC Intertie” - a pioneering very high voltage (at first, 400kV, later 500kV) DC (not AC, but for-real DC - like a car battery) transmission line.

If those transmission lines come down, LADWP is going to be short over 3,000 MW of power capacity in the blink of an eye, which cannot be replaced in your power source portfolio. You don’t have enough power transmission capacity for other sources coming into the LA basin to replace the DC Intertie.

Do a web search for “Pacific DC Intertie” to see what we’re talking about here. You know that huge power “substation” you see with all the high tension lines going in/out of it on the east side of I-5/I-210 where they come together at the north end of I-210 in Sylmar?

That’s where the 500kV DC line terminates.

It is quite the piece of electrical engineering.

Some areas of Yorba Linda have no water pressure. Per FOX news interview. Do not know what happened. Areas up in hills. Almost no way to stop the flames. Just what the truck is carrying.

...13 KCOP is by far top notch on this story....

I've been following this story via their live feed. Boy are their graphics annoying. Why must TV news stations cram the screen full of graphics?

The reporter will say: "If you look over here you can see..." but you can't see because the damn graphics are in the way. Grrrrrr.

Now suspect that some senior citizens have died in the Sylmar Trailer park. Wont know until the area cools down enough for search dogs to enter.

75% of registered CA voters stayed home on the 4th.

Produce at least 3 sources documenting your claim, please.

Villar is “in awe” and telling us all to be thankful for our FF. I wish I could slap him.

I wish I could help you.

It seems not long ago there was a big fire in the Yorba Linda area, so I wonder how much fuel there is to keep it going.....??
