Four senior Ohio Department of Job and Family Services mangers were disciplined this afternoon for their roles in improper computer checks that sought confidential information about "Joe the Plumber."
Jan Allen, acting director of the the state agency, announced that deputy child-support director Doug Thompson and assistant agency director Fred Williams would be placed on unpaid leave Monday.
Thompson will be suspended for four weeks and Williams for two weeks.
Two others, Paul Fraunholtz, deputy director of family stability, and Judi Cicatiello, deputy director of unemployment compensation, received written reprimands for their conduct.
Thompson will be suspended for four weeks at a loss of about $6,100 in pay and Williams will lose about $4,400 in salary during a two-week suspension.
The four employees also will receive professional-development counseling and all agency employees will receive ethics training on protecting the confidentiality of personal information, Allen announced.
Rejecting Republican calls for her dismissal, Democrat Gov. Ted Strickland yesterday suspended agency director Helen Jones-Kelley for a month without pay for what an investigation labeled as "wrongful acts."
A report by Inspector General Thomas P. Charles found that the computerized checks into the background of Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher were improper and not conducted for any legitimate governmental purpose.
The checks came the day after Republican John McCain frequently called Wurzelbacher as "Joe the Plumber" during his final presidential debate with Democrat Barack Obama on Oct. 15.
Jones-Kelley said such checks were run on those thrust into the public spotlight to see if they are receiving public assistance or owe child support or unemployment-compensation taxes. The report found that explanation was not credible.
The director had been placed on paid-leave on Nov. 7 after e-mails requested by The Dispatch revealed she had used her state e-mail account to help raise campaign funds for President-Elect Obama. Charles' report confirmed that the e-mails violated Strickland's policies against political activity involving state resources.
Charles' investigation faulted Williams and Thompson for participating in Jones-Kelley's authorization of checks on Wurzelbacher and criticized Thompson for instructing an employee to send a "deceptive e-mail" about a child-support check.
Fraunholtz and Cicatiello played no role in authorizing the checks on "Joe," but the report faulted them for failing to ensure that checks on the computer systems under their control were for legitimate purposes.
Well the suspension won’t look good on their resumes ...
I hope Joe the Plumber sues them all into penury.
THAT would be cool.
I wonder if there are any legal scholars around who can give an opinion of Joe's prospects for success in court.
Unless they apply for jobs with the Obamafia. Then they will be badges of honor.
They’ll get a slap on the wrist, then they will get big raises.
Will JTP sue...Or will Dear Leader stop him?
Heard Joe say that he will be suing the state of Ohio.
Good for him!
Go Joe Go
“No one ever resigns” ...Rothbard
Uh huh.
Stirred, not shaken?
This "wooly booger" ain't over yet, folks!
There's one happy ending, anyway.
As long as Ohio keeps electing dumbass democrat governers, they won't ever need a resume. That's how the machine works. There's quite a few people in that state government that need to see the inside of a prison for several years.
If not for Taft being a RINO, there'd be no governor Strickland right now.
But unless you can actually sue the offenders or make them pay somehow, the money award from the state, although welcome..seems to be a phyrric victory at best.
It was a feeble attempt at humor ... knowing how the Demo-rats operate ....
They should be taken down and, well...
Since “punishment” has already been handed out, Joe’s suit would only serve to punish the taxpayers of Ohio, unless somehow the findings of wrongdoing would allow him to burn through any immunity and target the wrongdoers directly. I hope that is what happens.
