Mailman fails to deliver, becomes local hero
L.A. Times ^ | 11/22/2008 | David Zucchino

Overwhelmed by piles of junk mail, 'Mailman Steve' quit bringing it to the people on his North Carolina route. Customers are grateful. The Direct Marketing Assn., however, is not amused.

Sick of junk mail?

Pay homage, then, to overstressed, overworked mailman Steven Padgett, who has confessed to a cardinal sin among the letter carriers tribe: He failed to deliver.

"Mailman Steve" -- a pudgy, kindly 58-year-old who toiled along a route in a rapidly growing neighborhood here -- was given probation in federal court this week for squirreling away at least seven years' worth of undelivered junk mail, which he had stacked in his garage and buried in his yard.

According to his attorney, Padgett felt overwhelmed by the torrents of "direct advertising mail" he was obligated to deliver as he contended with heart problems and diabetes.

It should come as no surprise that the U.S. Postal Service did not receive a single complaint from Padgett's customers about missing mail during the years he withheld pizza circulars, oil change discount notices and Chinese menus.

I wonder how many absentee ballots were in the stacks of discarded mail.

I really don’t want anyone deciding for me what counts as junk mail.

Postal authorities found hundreds of thousands of pieces of undelivered advertising, but no first-class mail such as letters or bills.

You're right! I should have thought of that.

As someone who’s paid very good money to have my “junk” mail delivered directly to people’s homes and mailboxes, I’d love to smack this jerk in his dumb face. Don’t want to do the job I paid you to do? Quit and find something else @$$hat!

Do you really want him, or anyone, deciding which mail you should get though?

And what if he just opened and discarded all first class mail?

A jury of his peers would have acquitted. If the mail ain’t worth spit, you must acquit.

I’ve heard plenty of carriers complain about this. Despite the abysmal response levels (nearly beyond measure at this point), mail loads increase on some routes to nearly unimaginable levels.

It is amazingly physical job and not one for slackers with health problems. That the PO allowed someone to continue this way is a statement on government managed services. I found carriers as a whole to be wonderful, friendly people. Also, their income and benefits are far less than is commonly believed.

Steve Padget is a thief and should be serving hard time.
The businesses that paid for the delivery of their advertising should go after this clown and bankrupt him.
How “democrat” of him to decide what the people on his mail route should receive.

When the mailman can't close the mailbox anymore, I take all the stuff directly to the trash can and restart the cycle. I don't look at any of it.

If anyone REALLY needs to get in touch with me... the deputies will knock on my door. All my bills and invoices are via email.

“As someone who’s paid very good money to have my “junk” mail delivered directly to people’s homes and mailboxes”

I put a sign above my mailbox that said “First Class Only”, and a trash can next to it that said “Other”.

The mail man todd me he couldn’t do that...

I left the trash can there and sort it when I pick up the mail.

Good job mailman Steve. I wish I had this guy deliver my mail. By all the comments I've read so far on this story, they neglect to mention NO ONE on this mailman's route complained to the Post Office about missing ‘important’ mail. The authorities said they found nothing but junk mail in his garage. Maybe the upper management loves junk mail companies because fewer people are using the US Mail. Many people pay their bills on line and if I need anything important delivered, I employ either UPS or FedEx. I have NEVER had a package turn up missing using them but always had a problem with the US Postal Service.
Again, great job Mailman Steve.

I WANT A CAR THAT RUNS ON JUNK MAIL!

That way I could look forward to getting it.
And I could spend my time getting on mailing lists instead of trying to get off of them.

....since 2003 I check the mail carefully....back then I almost tossed a letter from an unknown developer that ended up paying us $500,000 for some land options...last week I got an offer unsolicited from a land and timber buyer...a friend of ours got one from out of the blue from a cell phone tower company....now he’s getting $800/month from them....what happens is these guys go down to the court house and pull property records and do a mass mailing....it looks like a junk mail when you get it because you probably don’t recognise the sender....the first offer you get will be a low ball one...you can go up from there.
