One of the worst lists I have ever seen. Three I thought of immediately: Johnny Cash "Hurt" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmVAWKfJ4Go Death Cab for Cutie "I will follow you into the dark" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNIS0cuDOMw Pink Floyd "Wish you were here" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPm4GH3UUC8

"Till I Get it Right" by Tammy Wynette.

Hands down fabulous. She had The Voice.

There's one song that never fails to bring a tiny tear to my eye.

I could go with 5,6, and 7 on the list. My personal choice for most heart wrenching isn’t there, though. Whispering Winds, by Patti Page. “Whispering winds, don’t whisper to me of a love that can never be.” ... not on Youtube!

Johnny Cash singing “You Are My Sunshine” is one of the saddest songs of all time.

Any list that doesn’t have this song on it does not count.

Cats in the Cradle and Taxi are pretty strong in the sad department.

Also have to wonder why “Jolene” by Dolly Parton isn’t on the list.

What an incredibly sad song, true and from the heart of Dolly.

Criky that was bad!

Half the songs on Amy Grant's album Behind the Eyes would qualify here - especially "The Feeling I Had" and "Missing You".

Example:

Missing you is just a part of living
Missing you is just a way of life
I'm living out the life that I've been given
But baby, I still wish you were mine.

And:

I cannot take the heat
I guess I'm letting go
I'm tired of stitching up my dreams with
This thread of hope
I'm still a believer of
Twin hearts and timeless love
And all I ever wanted was
The feeling I had with us

This might seem wildly out of place on this thread but “She’s Gone” by Black Sabbath is quite a heart wrencher.

For sheer tearjerking, it’s got to be about a child, for me.

Can’t keep dry eyes even in public if I hear “Butterfly Kisses” or “Tears in Heaven.” But at least I can keep it to one tear or a misty eye. If I hear “Dance With My Father Again” by Luther Vandross, I am afraid I probably will be sobbing. I only hope I’m not in the carpool lane on the freeway driving 80 mph at the time.

For breakups, I think the best heartbreaking line is in Eric Clapton’s “Bellbottom Blues”: “Do you want to see me crawl across the floor to you? Do you want to hear me beg you to take me back...” And for breakups that are your own fault, a good one is Stevie Wonder’s “Who poured the love out?”

And there’s this one Engelbert Humperdinck sings

“I Never Said Goodbye”

She cried and walked away just yesterday
And like a fool, I let her go
We had a silly fight the night before
I never said “I love you so”
I wept all day and then I got the call
“Would you please come to see your wife”
“Something has happened and it’s very grave”
“We cannot save the lady’s life”

No, I never said goodbye and I never really told her
Just how much she meant to me
No, I never said goodbye, now it’s too late
And she’s just a memory
How can I go on
Now that girl is gone
I will know, until I die
I never said goodbye

Her perfume lingers all around me now
A pair of shoes lie on the floor
The bed unmade, where just last night, she laid
I cannot say I closed the door
A shopping list of things she’ll never buy
An apron lyin’ on the chair
Is that her laugh I hear out in the hall
I turn and call, but she’s not there
