Gay marriage is mostly for benefits, I know plenty of monogamous male gay couples who have a hard time with a lot of things(mortgages, visiting their partner in the hospital, doing taxes etc...). Getting "married" in the legal sense helps with those problems.

That said, the gay community is hardly united on the marriage issue. Plenty of gay activists argue that marriage is an obsolete institution and that gay groups should be agitating to come up with a solution that works for both gay and hetero couples better than the current arrangement.

They’ve already got the same exact rights as everyone else: To marry someone of the opposite sex. A heterosexual person of either sex cannot enter in a same-sex marriage, just like a homosexual person cannot.
