Facing the loss of his seat, U.S. Rep. Virgil H. Goode Jr. said Thursday that all late-arriving absentee ballots cast by U.S. troops overseas should be counted as part of next weeks recount in his 5th District race.
A federal judge in Richmond ruled Tuesday that Virginias State Board of Elections violated the law by mailing out absentee ballots to military voters too late for them to send back their ballot by Election Day. However, the judge added that the 4,750 such ballots across the state need not be counted, as they would not change the outcome of any race in Virginia.
In the 5th District race, Democrat Tom Perriello of Ivy defeated Goode, a Republican from Rocky Mount, by a margin of 745 votes, according to verified election returns. An official recount has been scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Note, per reports in
The Franklin News-Post, the absentee votes in question were cast by "members of the armed forces in Afghanistan, Iraq and other countries."

Apparently, the judge isn't very good at math. Out-of-state voters should not be disenfranchised because of the state's mis-timed ballot mailing.

I hope this can still be salvaged, but Goode should never have even had a close race. That campaign ad he did was a disaster.

Well perhaps the republicans can retake the seat. The young democrat was into everything except serving his country in uniform and perhaps the GOP can find a returning Marine or Soldier to drive that point home next time around.

If we can get a good candidate, we should win this district back.

Let’s steal it like a rat would to make up for that Ohio seat they just stole. Recount. Oh look I had some Goode ballots in my other pants.
(There could be fraud rat, there is everywhere maybe they should have really lost every race they end winning narrowly. but that looks like a margin that would stand up)

Interesting to note a non-incumbent Republican (only Goode) has never won this seat in modern times. But it’s conservative (sadly too many “conservative” rats) and NObama.

Gotta love it. All those kids at UVA, many of whom are out of staters and also vote at home, get to have their votes count in a district they don't really live in. But those defending our liberties are disenfranchised.
I suggest active and retired military show some courage at home and march on Richmond.

Goode pissed of the Islamist fifth column. Second to the retiring Tancredo, he is the congressman they hate most.
