A new Research2000/DailyKos poll finds Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) leading Gov. Linda Lingle (R) by 11 points in a potential 2010 Senate matchup.

(Dec. 15-17, 600 LV) Inouye 53 Lingle 42

The survey also tracked their favorable/unfavorable ratings, with Inouye at 58%/37% and Lingle at 53%/41%.

Inouye, first elected to the Senate in 1962, was recently tapped as the next chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee. Only once (in 1992) has he won re-election with less than 74% of the vote.

Dan Inouye, for all his stature, is not invincible. Linda Lingle should run. Even if she loses, a near-win would increase her stature.

Presuming Danny boy is gonna want to mount a really vigorous campaign at 86. Akaka next has to run at 88 in 2012. That’s gonna be even more ludicrous. I’d like to see Duke Aiona take him out (though more presumably he’d prefer to be Governor for awhile first, not just 2 years).

Inouye was in the rehab hospital with Bob Dole, after WWII.

Isn't he like eleventy-one years old?

He’s been in Congress since 1959, Hawaii’s first House member upon statehood. He was in the legislature for 5 years before that, so that’s 54 years of continuous political officeholding. Only Robert Byrd has him beaten by 8 years, he’s been in continuous office since 1947 (6 years in the WV legislature, 6 in the U.S. House, 50 in the Senate), so nearly 62 years.

Linda SHOULD run...

Linda Lingle lost a lot of respect in my book by keeping Barack Obama's birth certificate (or whatever document pertaining to his birth that might be in the possession of her state bureaucracy) hidden from the scrutiny of the American public. This, despite the fact that the content of that document could well decide the issue of whether or not Obama is constitutionally eligible to be POTUS. What Lingle is doing by hiding the document is nothing short of abusing her office to obstruct the implementation of the Constitution of the United States, a Constitution which she is sworn to uphold!!!

When it comes down to it, I think Lingle would’ve let the certificate out if she thought it was fake. She endorsed McCain, and it defies my logic that she would hide the certificate if she thought it was a fraud.

Anyway, 2 things with this poll-
1. It’s not even 2009, and the Obama administration has not even been fully filled out, let alone sworn in.
2. It was commissioned by the Daily Kos.

But then again, for a Senator that has been serving Hawaii in the senate for over four decades, and has been continuously re-elected by about 50% (median) of the vote, and 11 point lead seems overcome able if a potential Lingle campaign has some smart heads on their shoulders, and especially if Obama is a flop.

Thank you for the ping!

I believe Gov. Lingle is doing her job. Releasing another person’s BC would be a violation of her reponsibility as Gov. of Hawaii. She isn’t a dirty politician.

She isn’t like Obama, who had a Chicago judge release to the public sealed divorce records of a political opponent, essentially knocking that person out of the race for Senator. There is no difference between Blagojevich or Obama - dirty is dirty and they are two of a kind.

Very good early numbers.

30% is the most a Republican has ever got against him for Senate and that was in ‘62.

I’d love to see one of these prehistoric democrats go down. Warren Magnuson style!

He might even choose to retire rather than face a real race.
