Williams Bewails Decline of 'Classically-Trained' Journos, Rise of Guys With 'Opinion And a Modem'

There was no Memorex around when the brontosauri were bidding bye-bye, but I think we have a pretty good idea of what they sounded like as they were going extinct. Just listen to Brian Williams this morning. Appearing on Morning Joe, the NBC Nightly News anchor lamented the decline of "classically-trained" journalists in favor of guys with "an opinion and a modem."

A question from Pat Buchanan about the ebbing fortunes of the old media set Williams off on a soliloquy he assured us was not self-interested.

“Today’s journalists are just conduits for liberal editors. There really is no point in having them. They no longer investigate to reach a conclusion. They reach a conclusion and then look for data to support their conclusion.”

It’s either that or sometimes just “crafting” a story to get ratings, especially in a local market. Of course in that instance no story is more important than the “personality” of the on-air “talent.”

Investigative reporting? What’s that?

Take a read of Robert Novak’s book, “Prince of Darkness” and you will see a career of real reporting over decades.

People here are so immune now to “news” they don’t even know what real reporting is anymore. It’s a bunch of hacks and TV “personalities” all copying the same 24 newscycle.

Utter garbage.

Sympathy FRiend, as the disease has most certainly progressed since I was in college. I remember looking at this girl in our TV & media course and not even bothering to ask her anything. As for as I was concerned she wouldn’t know nada about anything.

Her stated to desire to be a “anchor” convinced me she was a vapid blonde. Don’t think I said another word to her the rest of the semester. Not sure she noticed. She was cute but as I recall she showed no sign of intellect in the course either.

When someone gives you an answer along the lines of “I wanna be on TV” it’s akin to “I wanna be a star” and not work hard.

That’s how I see it.

“Classically trained journalists,” read, “brainwashed and indoctrinated propagandists.” Let’s face it, Brian, your journalists abused their priviledge. Now they must surrender it.

There’s no point in having them around, with all their “classical education”, when all they do is LIE....for the socialist left. They are every bit as worthless as their HollyPervert counterparts are degenerate.

The only evidence of classical training among the journos I have seen was when they all picked up the word gravitas in the pre-election Bush-bashing of the last century.

They even f*** that up. In Latin, v is pronounced w. Thus, the word is correctly pronounced GRAH.we.tahs, not GRAV.e.tas.

Wish I could argue with you. This kid’s verging on brilliant and hasn’t ever had to work at anything to do well. That’s what was so disappointing about him choosing RTF (my undergrad major, BTW). He could have excelled at anything he chose, but he chose something he didn’t have to work at. And still didn’t graduate with any sort of honors. And he wonders why he’s not getting offers from the Hollywood studios.

Hey, it’s Christmas Eve! I’ll ask Santa to bring him some gumption!

The news media has only one product and only one: credibility. They have sold that one product to the left wing of the democrat party. There is nothing left on the shelf for others to consume.

If the ‘Classically-Trained’ journalists had ethics and reported facts, we’d flock to read their work. If Williams had the talent to be a reporter, he’d investigate the question (not like they vetted Obama, or like they did Palin, but objectively by following the facts) and discover why they are losing money.

Well if it helps try to impress upon him (that someone passed along via you) that education never ends and it only acts as a base for further education of self. The most I’ve learned was always outside the classroom and this was the case in fourth grade and beyond. (A set of Britanica put at hand.)

Hollywood studios? Man, I hope that is pure humor. But having talked to this woman about her daughter who recently graduated and is fortunate to be working now for a financial firm in Baltimore, I think it’s a prevalent disease among youth.

Her daughter wants to find a job here in the NYC area, which at her age may be possible since so many more senior roles are being eliminated but it still wouldn’t be easy considering the amount of young grads chasing work.

She told me that her daughter wanted to quit and come up to NY and look for work full time as she doesn’t like her job. I was like huh? What does she think the lower rungs will be more fun here? No way! In fact, it will be worse as the pay will be about the same but the cost of living is higher here. So tell her to take a reality check and be grateful for having a job (her aunt having just been hit with the wave of layoffs at Citigroup) and understand Rome isn’t built in a day.

The mom said she thinks her daughter doesn’t want to listen. She’s a school teacher and believes the daughter hears it as just family banter. I said I would be willing to speak to her and give her insight from my business perspective “outside the family” as it may be readily heard.

Her mom thought that her sister losing her job may have acted as a reality check. Young people, in fact almost all youth doesn’t understand anything outside of the extremes of stability versus slacking, with no big consequences in-between. The economy as they know it has been stable and prosperous.

They know no history and have no basis of comparison as Jimmy Carter is a relic and means nothing to them.

I was really young back then but I remember the misery that was a direct result of that man’s failures. I fear we are on the brink now again. Hope I am wrong.

Anyway, tell your nephew to grow some larger gonads because in this economy he’s going to need’em. Maybe just that one liner with a smile will carry some weight.

A very Merry Christmas to you and your family!

And to all our veterans and those in service to our nation, here and abroad.
We appreciate their sacrifice!

I worked for one classic journalist in my brief career. He was Grant Price, News Director for WMT, Cedar Rapids and later, when I knew him, KWWL TV in Waterloo, IA.
He passed away just a few months ago and was widely hailed as a straight shooter and eminently fair.

If Brian Williams considers himself a “classically trained journalist”, or even a trained journalist, or anything OTHER than a talentless shill for the left then he is even more deluded than I thought.

He's more deluded than you thought.

Great post and thread. Thanks for the ping. Thanks to all contributors.
