BARACK OBAMA

"Barack Obama is on the phone screaming at me."

(Jim Geraghty reporting)

There's a lot of new, fresh, eye-opening anecdotes in this long article on Obama as a state legislator by Todd Spivak of the Houston Press.

But in light of today's story of Obama's near-physical altercation, this anecdote of Obama's temper is interesting:

It's not quite eight in the morning and Barack Obama is on the phone screaming at me. He liked the story I wrote about him a couple weeks ago, but not this garbage.

Months earlier, a reporter friend told me she overheard Obama call me an asshole at a political fund-raiser. Now here he is blasting me from hundreds of miles away for a story that just went online but hasn't yet hit local newsstands.

It's the first time I ever heard him yell, and I'm trembling as I set down the phone. I sit frozen at my desk for several minutes, stunned...

In a follow-up report published a couple weeks later, I wrote about these disgruntled black legislators and the central role Senate President Emil Jones played in Obama's revived political life.

The morning after the story was posted online, I arrived early at my new offices. I hadn't taken my coat off when the phone rang. It was Obama.

The article began, "It can be painful to hear Ivy League-bred Barack Obama talk jive."

Obama told me he doesn't speak jive, that he doesn't say the words "homeboy" or "peeps."

It seemed so silly; I thought for sure he was joking. He wasn't.

He said the black legislators I cited in the story were off-base, and that they couldn't have gotten the bills passed without him.

I started to speak, and he shouted me down.

He said he liked the other story I wrote.

I asked if there was anything factually inaccurate about the latest story.

He repeated that his former colleagues couldn't have passed the bills without him.

He asked why I wrote this story, then cut me off when I started to answer.

He said he should have been given a chance to respond.

I told him I had requested an interview through his communications director.

He said I should have called his cell phone.

I reminded him that he had asked me months ago to stop calling his cell phone due to his busier schedule.

He said again that I should have called his cell phone.

Today I no longer have Obama's cell phone number. I submitted two formal requests to interview Obama for this story through his Web site, but have not heard back. I also e-mailed interview requests to three of his top staffers, but none responded.

Maybe he'll call the day after this story runs. I'll get to the office early just in case. And this time I'll have my recorder ready.

Again, my point from the earlier post stands. I don't think Obama is a hothead, or flies off the handle with any degree of frequency. It's entirely possible - nay, likely - that many of us, in Obama's shoes, would want to take a swing at state legislator Rickey Hendon as well.

But the Washington Post did a front page story on McCain's temper, leading with an anecdote of Bob Kerrey breaking up a near-fight between McCain and Sen. Chuck Grassley in 1992. Too bad Bob Kerrey says the account is false, that Grassley and McCain worked out the emotional issue at hand among themselves, and that the Post never contacted him.

In Mendell's book, we find a near mirror-image of that McCain temper anecdote. The book has been in print since last year, and no major media organization has found the story of Obama "ready to throw punches" worth mentioning.

The image of an angry Obama being restrained by others doesn't mesh well with the smooth, calm, confident, always-at-ease, ready-for-the-moment image we're being sold. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that Obama's fans in the press want to avert their eyes.

“Obama told me he doesn’t speak jive, that he doesn’t say the words “homeboy” or “peeps.”

IMO, this is probably true. This action is directly from the Saul Alinsky playbook. In order to achieve success and disarm the opposition, one needs to present themselves in a non-threatening manner. That was a complaint of 0bama’s buddy William Ayers about the hippie movement. Ayers claimed their dress & appearance and language turned people off, resulting in the hippie movement either being ignored or not taken seriously. For people to pay attention, one needs to cut their hair, wear a suit, and stay away from polarizing slang.

I encourage every neocon to read Alinski. He’s usually credited with the philosophy of “think globally, act locally.” If you remember, this is how we won Congress in 1994. We made the national election a local one.

Alinski’s methods could easily be used to defeat democrats in the midterms and 0bama in 2012.

I think Obama throwing a tantrum jives perfectly with the behavior of a man married to a pitbull who kicks the sh$t out of him every so often.

“I don’t think he has the personality to overcome adversity.”

I think that is glaringly obvious. The guy is a schoolyard mouth who is protected by the teacher.

He's a Daly-style, Capone clone Chicago thug with nothing of note to his credit besides an undeserved rise to prominence and power despite having nothing of note to his credit. An all sizzle no steak, cheap empty suit, script-reading trained chimp who can't think his own way out of a wet paper bag.

How low have America's imbecilic citizens brought this once-great nation to elect a tool like this President? He's a bad joke.

My one great satisfaction will be watching the horror on the faces of the news robots and regular folk as they watch the results of what they have done. Then, as was true of Clinton, after two years of this craven clown in office, the GOP will see its stock skyrocketing again in 2010, and again in 2012.

>>3/4 into the audio gets you to this part:

No sooner has Obama finished speaking than an irate Hendon has already returned to the microphone, demanding to be recognized. He positively shouts:

I just want to say to the last speaker — you’ve got a lot of nerve to talk about being responsible, and yet you vote to close the DCFS office on the West Side when you wouldn’t have voted to close the one on the South Side. So I apologize to my Republican friends for my bipartisanship comments, because there are clearly some Democrats on this side of the aisle that don’t care about the West Side either, especially the last speaker.”

At first, the entire chamber is silent. The chair asks Obama whether he would like to respond, and shouts suddenly become audible in the background. He finally addresses the chamber, calmly:

I understand Senator Hendon’s anger. Actually, it turns — the, uh — I was not aware that I had voted ‘No’ on that last piece of legislation. I would have the Record record that I intended to vote ‘Yes.’ On the other hand I would appreciate the next time, my dear colleague Senator Hendon, ask me about a vote before he names me on the floor.

Obama ends that sentence with a descending tone of voice. He sounds slightly upset. According to other accounts of this exchange, Obama placed his hand on Hendon’s shoulder and Hendon slapped it away.

The two men then took their grievances off the Senate floor. According to Chicago Tribune reporter David Mendell’s book, Obama: From Promise to Power, Obama had to be physically restrained in the heated confrontation that followed in an adjoining room. Mendell would later say that Obama was “ready to throw some punches.”

Mendell records that Hendon never accepted Obama’s explanation that the vote had been a mistake. He writes:

Individuals close to the situation say Hendon still believes that Obama voted against his project in order to pacify North Side fiscal conservatives who were leery of some West Side projects.

Since the beginning of Obama’s presidential run, Hendon has stopped talking to the media about the incident. As he told Mendell, “I have been advised to leave Barack alone and that is what I am going to do.”

I've seen that hidden anger many times. It especially came out during the last debate. BO does not like to be criticized or ask impromptu questions not favorable to him. He's an angry man and a complete, assh*le. He is not a good person. It's all about himself. I keep reading repeatedly that McCain called his wife a C*unt in front of everyone. But the only source is someone who heard it and it keeps getting reported on, because that is journalism nowadays. The “Gossip Game” and it gets in print, done, it’s ‘verified’.

But yet people are supposed to post, cross post, AND call Obama’s private cell phone number even after being asked to stop calling to verify something BEFORE printing?

Um yeah. No double standard there.
