BEIJING (AFP) – Paleontologists in east China have dug up what they believe is one of the world's largest group of dinosaur fossils including the remains of an enormous "platypus", state press said Tuesday.

Paleontologists have discovered 15 areas near Zhucheng city in Shandong province that contain thousands of dinosaur bones, the Beijing News reported.

"This group of fossilised dinosaurs is currently the largest ever discovered in the world... in terms of area," the paper cited paleontologist Zhao Xijin of the China Academy of Sciences as saying.

In one area measuring 300 metres (990 feet) by 10 metres, more than 3,000 bones were found, the report said. Since digging began in March scientists have discovered more than 7,600 bones.

Included in the find was the largest "platypus" -- or "duck-billed dinosaur" in Chinese -- ever discovered measuring nine metres high with a wingspan wider than 16 metres, the report said.

Zhao said the discovery of so many dinosaurs in such a dense area could provide clues on how the animals became extinct towards the end of the Cretaceous period 65 million years ago, the Beijing News said.

Scientists have also identified the remains of ankylosaurus, tyrannosaurus and coelurus, according to China's official Xinhua news agency.

It’s almost as if the Dinosaurs were a huge experiment by God, and He decided to go a different direction. Wiped the slate clean and started over.

It will be fascinating to one day see what actually happened back then.

Dinosaurs still exist. You can get them tastily prepared at your neighborhood KFC.

When my oldest daughter was 5 she came to me one day and said that there was no Easter Bunny.

Curious as to how she learned this fact I asked her why she would say that?

"Because bunnies are mammals and mammals don't lay eggs," she replied.

I then owned up and told her that the Easter Bunny was only a trick to take attention away from the real mammal that laid eggs, the Easter Duckbill Platypus so that no one would bother him.

She put out cookies for "Bill" after that.

Somehow I don't think alcohol was his inspiration. Call it a hunch.

A devout Catholic woman once made the case to me that A) dinosaur bones were put in the ground by the devil or B) the results showing dinosaur bones were millions of years old were a trick by the devil.

After the Creosote extinctions, mammals were able to take advantage of the fact that they were endothermic (liked flowers), placental (had bad breath) and quadrupedal (didn't know any better) to spread and diversify.

In the Tutelary Age, mammals became the dominant class and grew quite large at times. The great Irish bunny, for example, often had antlers eight feet across.

Looks to me like a rare “reporterosaurus journalisticus” an extinct creature from the old USA period. It evolved in to the current “drivebyosuras rex” found in plentiful quantities in the river “mainstream medius”.
