WAUWATOSA, Wis. -- A brawl at the Mayfair Mall is causing people to raise questions about the ongoing security problems at the shopping center.
Mall administrators have not commented on the incident.
Police said that a fight broke out between two men outside the mall’s Wet Seal store on Friday.
After some initial brawling, the fight spilled into the store and as many as eight more people joined the fray.
Police said that the battle turned the store into a mess and all the combatants scattered.
Mall surveillance cameras helped capture three of the people who allegedly took part; they are all facing disorderly conduct citations.
“It's scary because young kids like my brother go there and he wouldn't go back shopping there by himself with his friends if there's fights there without a parent,” Heidi Fregien, of Wauwatosa, said.
Word of the brawl drew mixed reaction among shoppers, some of whom said that they don’t feel unsafe at the mall.
“I think the problems have been pretty sporadic here over the course of the years. [The] movie theatre, I know they say brings in a lot of the problems,” Random Lake resident Darin Retzer said.
Mayfair has faced similar problems in the past. In 2002, a fight at the theatre made headlines.
In 2007, the mall instituted new rules after several other incidents. It required an adult chaperone for anyone under 18 on Fridays and Saturdays.
Those rules didn't apply at the time, officers said.
Of the 10 alleged fighters, the three men taken into custody were adults.
"I think they need to up security, if it's that big of a problem, [you should] have more cops present," shopper John Murray said. "When I was young, you had your parents drop you off at the mall or the movies, you hung out and you caused trouble. That's what they're doing."
Murray said fights have been part of the shopping mall culture as long as he can remember.
All three suspects have dates in Wauwatosa Municipal Court in February. They face $600 disorderly conduct tickets.

Mayfair is awful! Used to be a nice mall with great stores. Now, I get the whimwhams every time I go. Thugs everywhere.

There are two big problems at Mayfair.
First one is the recently-added movie Marcus movie theater. It has attracted the gangbanger type of crowd, as well as a ton of black teens that are powder kegs waiting for someone to piss them off and prove what tough sh1ts they are. They mill around after movies, and words get exchanged and this crap happens.
Second is the bus route that buses most of these people here.
It is an urban black youth problem. Everyone knows it. Nobody has balls enough to say it publicly. They are busing Milwaukee’s troubled kids to Mayfair and this stuff happens.
They need to get rid of the movie theater. That will stop many of these people from coming to the mall in the first place, as they don’t come there to actually SHOP.
Second, they need to get rid of the bus routes to Mayfair. They can drop people off nearby, a few blocks away, but it will be inconvenient enough for gangbangers who don’t want to walk that far to go to a place that doesn’t have anything for them to do - as the theater will be gone.

I heard mayfair went ghetto long time time ago. used to be a nice place back in the late 70’s early 80’s. I wounder how the rest of the town is doing. - There is a reason I don’t go back :o)
You think they would be too tired to fight, after a long day of productive labor. They were probably arguing over whether MIT or Caltech has the more stringent curriculum/s

Young blacks are ruining this mall the same way they did with one called Northridge nearby-which is presently closed and boarded up.
Bayshore isn’t too bad and Brookfield seems OK. Mayfair has some stores they don’t, but it isn’t worth the hassle. Grafton is getting some more stores, but I doubt we will get a mall.
I live in Milwaukee. Mayfair is one of the premier malls, good facilities BUT it attracts the bad elements. Recently, they stupidly decreased security. They also instituted a strict curfew for minors, but these guys were over 18. They should get rid of the movie theater and any stores that attract the wrong type.

You got that right. When we watch the news, you can almost always tell if they say something happened in a given area, who the perps are. It is a shame that I can say that, but it is the truth.
