Former French President Jacques Chirac was rushed to a hospital after being mauled by his pet dog who is being treated for depression, in a dramatic incident that rattled the ex-president's wife.
The couple's white Maltese poodle, called Sumo, has a history of frenzied fits and became increasingly prone to making "vicious, unprovoked attacks" despite receiving treatment with anti-depressants, Chirac's wife Bernadette said.

I’ll try to help you out....(chuckle)
Poodles are always on the top ten ‘most likely to bite’ lists folks. We had one as a kid...and I’m big into dog rescues, have two in my home as I type this...but I wouldn’t have anything to do with this breed, or its offshoots.
Fortunately, they are not as big as a Mastiff...(chuckle)
Speaking of which, anyone see the Soledad OBrien v Mastiff owning family in her ‘building’ in NYC this morning on Fox News?
Seems Soledad wants to evict a family because of their dog.

Clinically Depressed Poodle Mauls Former French President ChiracIf you had to pretend to like and respect Jacques Chirac, how would you feel? Sometimes a real French poodle just snaps...

He's lucky it wasn't a pug.

I have a maltese poodle named Lilly...she is the smartest dog..ever...I have another dog, a shi-tzu. She's a sweet thing, but doesn't come near in the brains dept. You can see in this picture how Smart the poodle is. You just have to look at the eyes:

Two things:
Poodles can be great dogs - just don't ever tell them they are poodles.
Mine is a bit skittish but I attribute that to having been adopted on the second bounce in a busy intersection.
Second:
About the "mauled" versus "treated as an outpatient" thing - remember, we're dealing with the French here.
Chirac will probably get six months intensive therapy for mental distress and a purple heart from the FSPCA.

Sounds to me like the dog was just emulating its master.

I looked up Maltese Poodles because I really had never heard of them before. They are in the toy classification which means a big one is about the size of a cat. The website said they are "lively and capricious" which I took as code words for a dog who is inclined to nip. Of course, even a dog of that size can give you a nasty bite which might necessitate stitches but their is no way they could maul an adult man.
A full-sized poodle on the other hand is a surprisingly big and robust dog who could maul someone if the dog wanted to. Don't let the sissy haircuts fool you, a standard poodle is a real dog.

Thanks for posting that. You beat me to it.
And I’m sure you know there’s no such thing as a “French poodle.” The breed is from Germany. Leave it to the French to turn to the Germans for their national dog.
I just loathe these hybrid designer dogs. Why dilute perfection? God created the standard poodle and everything else is just a dog.

No, but he's not my dog either.

Do the poodles try to surrender to your dogs, offer to find them a table, and bring them a bottle of vintage poodle wine, circa 1940-41? LOL
