WV, Charleston, Marlington, trout fishin bump!!! I’ve stood thigh deep in the middle of the Williams on the opening day of trout season and it was snowing then....dang them rainbows were good that evening. Water was like 35º and I was sweating in my waders by 10 am. Took my thermals off then. Talk about sleeping well that night.....cabin and a fire place going.

Oh heck....can I get some sympathy for my fumbling fingers and tiring eyesight? No, you just want to sit and enjoy Gwenny..... (kiddin’) You Tx folk have low tolerances for BS....at least that is how I remember it in Waco and Abilene....Austin, well now, wish you’d explain how Texas puts up with that?? (The University)...has to be the football team. The students there were surely interesting to watch when I was there in ‘98. Other than the music (blues), which is great (SRV in particular), Austin is just so, so...San Antonio...not bad....you can keep the overcrowding in Houston.

Ever notice how mankind refuses to duck when he knows that history beam is there and always has been. Seems he just loves to smack his head repeatedly against it, and go 'duh', what happened??

Kudos.....whenever a leader thinks he can outmaneuver the inherent nature of mankind, well, we know this rest of the stories.

In SW Missouri we had freezing rain, turing to ice, Monday night. Then today, we got another dose. Started with ice pellets and then turned to snow. So we have snow over a thick layer of ice. Schools are going to be closed for a second day tomorrow.

That said, it is not as bad as previous ice storms in the last couple of years. The biggest difference is fewer trees down and fewer power outages. Maybe between taking out the dead/weak trees and more agressive trimming, there are fewer trees near power lines.

We’ve been warned in Austin/Hill Country to expect outages as we are in catastrophic drought, and debris/material has collected in our power lines’ interruptors with no rain since forever to rinse it out.. the ice will cause those particles to short out the lines.

I am in the NW part of Travis County, about 10 miles NW of Austin. I just went outside and took a look around. We are getting some badly needed rain, as we have been experiencing a severe drought. I live on Lake Travis, and it is down about 50 feet from normal.

Our driveway is wet, and a light rain is falling, but nothing looks to be freezing.

I'm going to crawl under my down cover and get a good night's sleep. If this stuff freezes, we're stuck in the house as our house is on a hill and we have a driveway from hell with a big curve in it. No way to navigate that thing if it's iced over.

I hope everyone stays safe and warm. Prayers going up for those badly hit.

Is he just going to let white people freeze?

He doesn't care, he moved on up to a deluxe mansion in DC...

Seriously though, prayers for all the people affected by this storm.

I came in on 1431, and there was nothing to worry about. The bridge just east of Jonestown had a little ice, but the sand trucks had been there.

183 and MOPAC / Loop 1 were clear as well. KLBJ is reporting that it MOPAC is closed at 2222, but that is just the N bound flyover.

I had read back a while, Texas was pretty parched and had been for a while......as with Texas philosophy, as always, its either all or nothing....so someone came up with the card game.

That aside, will pray you folks in Bush country to get back the rain that the Libs in Seattle stole from ya.

an inch or two of ice on anything weighs a ton (not literally, of course) but enough to down power lines, trees, put a halt to emergency services and other problems ... catastrophic might be an appropriate word if it doesn't go away soon

Hurrican Katrina was "catastrophic".

2 inches of ice is not catastrophic.

You must not have been through any real severe ice storms before... :-)

I just know you're kidding right!!??

I was born in upstate IL, I've lived in Philly, mid PA, mid NC, WI, Switzerland, GA, and ND.

Ice?? I've seen some...and as bad as it can get, it is not catastrophic.

Hurrican Katrina was catastrophic.

Ice storms are bad...no doubt about it. They can even be "really bad". But catastrophic?

Hurrican Katrina was catastrophic.

After the last power outage/ice storm I bought one of these and plugged it into my electrical box. Good idea ... hopefully, you're using a cross over box. Otherwise, utility repair crews working working your area will be totally pissed.

Yup. Had an electrician do it.

Central KY here - it’s on the tail-end now. Lots of ice, rain and snow. Tons of downed trees in the neighborhood. We still have power for now, but it’s been shaky and flickering for the last hour. Internet still on, obviously.

Going to get cold tonight, so this winter wonderland isnt’ going away anytime soon. Can count on more trees down tonight, that’s for sure.

More than a million wait in icy darkness across US

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Well over a million people shivered in ice-bound homes across the country Wednesday, waiting for warmer weather and for utility crews to restring power lines brought down by a storm that killed 23 as it took a snowy, icy journey from the Southern Plains to the East Coast.

But with temperatures plunging, utility officials warned that it could be mid-February before electricity is restored to some of the hardest-hit places. The worst of the power failures were in Kentucky, Arkansas and Ohio.

Just getting to their source was difficult for utility crews. Ice-encrusted tree limbs and power lines blocked glazed roads, and cracking limbs pierced the air like popping gunfire as they snapped.

In Kentucky, National Guard soldiers were dispatched to remove the debris. Oklahoma, already struggling to restore power there, planned to send crews to help in Arkansas later in the week.

“It looks like a tornado came through, but there wasn’t a path; it was everywhere,” said Mel Coleman, the chief executive officer of the North Arkansas Electric Cooperative in Salem. The power is out at his house, too, and he spent Tuesday night in a chair at his office.
