A federally funded study on Megan's Law in New Jersey has found that it does not deter first-time sex offenders or help prevent convicted sex offenders from re-offending. The study is one of a limited number nationwide to empirically examine the impact of sex-offender registration and notification laws such as Megan's Law, which now can be found in every state. --snip-- some people may take better precautions to protect their children if they know there is a sex offender in the neighborhood

Well: we sure don’t want to stigmatise the sex offenders, now do we?
Only a liberal could look at the results of a law which is designed to protect the public from repeat offenders and even mention that it does not deter first-time offenders.
Honestly I have always thought that Megans Law is a bad law.
If someone can not be trusted to be in society then they should not be in society. Period.
Creating a new class of citizens that are labeled in society is just another form of using government for social engineering.
Why do we not label violent offenders the same way? I would like to know if my next door has a criminal history of beating people senseless. So let’s label them too.
Or how about thieves? Or every possible crime even?
All of that being said, I understand why Megan’s Law was made and the intention is good. I just would prefer to see tougher punishments for real child molestors and to keep the real offenders out of society for good instead of just releasing them and labeling them.
Just apply the same logic to this law that the anti- gunner socialist apply to all of the gun laws.
It does not matter that they are useless do not really stop a criminal from beiong a criminal etc. They make people FEEL GOOD. So we keep the several 10’s of thousands of gun laws on the books.
Well it does not matter if Megans Law actually stops a single perp. It surely makes the families living where these scumbags live feel better, so under our current Governments style of work this law should stay put. It serves its purpose.
Protecting perversion is one of the first priorities of the demonrats.

Well that is a nice thought but not relevant to the issue. Having worked in the Prison system for a number of years I soon realized that probally less then 1/6th of all the prisoners in the building ever had any business being released into civilized society. Yet almost ALL were at some point.
Without an effective instituted death penalty the prisons would become small states rapidly.
Amend Megan’s Law to require mandatory castration.
Problem solved. Next.
In fact, I've said for a long time that Megan's Law would have a terribly destructive impact over the long term -- because it is effectively an acknowledgement by government that the legal system cannot protect people from sexual predators. A state that implements such a law is basically saying to its citizens: "We can't protect you from these people, but we'll certainly prosecute you if you protect yourself from them."
This is a recipe for anarchy.
I always thought the point of the law was to give information to parents so that those who care enough will know to take extra precautions regarding their children. There is an offender located about 1/4 mile away from me. No one bothers him that I know of, but the parents in the neighborhood know who he is and consequently we don’t go about the day in condition white. I’m sure that nothing will stop him if he decides to offend again, but I do what I can to make sure it’s not my kids. Without the law, no one would have a clue.
That said, I’m a strong believer in the idea that recidivism rates should strongly correlate with the sentence and the treatment. As one poster said, if they’re still a danger when they get out, maybe they need to stay in longer.
See my profile page for a proposed solution.
Don’t worry. The labeling will probably come soon. You’ll be labeled “conservative”, “gun-owner”, “anti-choice”, “hate-filled”, “penis oppressor” (if you’re male) or some such thing.
Rule 303 has proved to be 100% effective in preventing re-offense.
Something to think about as America spirals out of control into anarchy (or stumbles into liberalism anyway)
